Which started out as a general comment from DarrenKeith instantly morphed into a full-time confession of music we owned and had a passion for. From Neil Sedaka to soft rock to Traffic, we listed music, absolutely no hoilds barred. The above list is the first volume of our love of music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Suffice it to say there will be more, so stay tuned.

If you told me several years ago that I would make it this far, Id probably back slowly away from you for fear you might be insane….but it looks like I’m actually here at #250 a place I would have thought I would never be. If the music these days is any indication, I see no reason to stop now…and who knows, 300 may be here before you know it.

I decided to lift the rules on song selections for this podcast and just provide tracks I know and love. The Pointer Sisters and Bill Cosby, in addition to being old-school tracks from the late 70′s, also make me smile and laugh, and that’s a good thing. Shoutots to TGrundy, James Madison, Theresa and Joaquino with providing me the laughter. Shouting out to my friend Mario Mixmaster McQuay, I was also able to provide house music he hadn’t even heard yet, from arguably one of the best albums of 2012, Ralf Gum’s “Never Leave You.” What puts this track as my favorite one is the fact that the vocals are from the one and only Caron Wheeler.

I also wanted to roll back and drop some tracks that were my favorite tracks between 2000 and early 2006. These tracks were discovered as I was listening to music and unable to put it into podcasts since they were not from the same year. I was a huge fan of Bah Samba (vocalist Alice Russell), Cooly’s Hot Box (with Angela Johnson and Chris Ullrich from Tortured Soul on vocals) , D-Influence and Beef Wellington – and continue to be a huge fan of 45 and Swing Out Sister- and actually found about them years after they came upon the scene. For this reason, I wanted to make up for lost time and represent their goodness. I’ll continue to do so in podcasts in the future as well.

Last year, Ralf Gum, Funkommunity, Mark deClive Lowe, Positive Flow, and DJ Kemit were four of my favorite albums of the year, and they are included here for just that reason. They have so many strong songs, it’s near impossible to figure out what tracks to place into podcasts, they’re so good. This year also starts off with a strong start with Beady Belle and Alice Russell. With the year starting off with such a great flow, I believe that this year will be as good as, if not better than, last year.

There are so many people I wanted to thank in the podcast but I didn’t have enough time left to doso, so I’m going to send my shoutouts here and on Facebook. I have to thank the past podcasters Honey Soul, Lisa Stanton, KB, and Luv Sels for pushing me forward. Much appreciation to Vivrant Thang, Soul Afrodisiac, AG, Claudia Hyps, and Alethea for having my back even during the radio blog days (wow). Many thanks to Grant Love and Trent for giving me inspiration and invaluable music assessments. The ones from the UK who really keep me flowing are Michael Welsh, Ricky McCarthy, and Paul Eversley.

There will be more to thank and around 5 podcasts in the queue, so keep your eyes and ears open.

This podcast caps off the year 2012 and sets the stage for 2013,which will be big for me, so stay tuned. Going to try to keep this short and sweet. With Ralf Gum, The Sunburst Band, DJ Kemit, and Ananda Project, you know that I’ve got some serious head-nodders in the mix, an Funkommunity, Raw Stylus, Mr. Barrington, and Cool Million also adding to the flow. Watch out for Carvalho in 2013, as this brother from the UK is doing it well. Miles Bonny and Brenk Sinatra show their prowess as S3, while Oddissee gives you a great dose of hip hop as well. We’ve also got ethereasl vocals from Workshy and Yuna complimenting the soulful vocals of Anthony David and Dionne Bromfield.

01 – Breakout (It’s Better To Travel)
03 – Stoned Soul Picnic (Shapes And Patterns)
03 – Somewhere In The World – (Shapes And Patterns)
16 – Where Do I Go (Somewhere Deep In The Night)
17 – Shapes And Patterns [Reprise] (Shapes And Patterns)

This took quite a bit of time and thought to put together, as with any great group. Having time constraints and placing the best known cuts along with the absolutely sublime can be an intensive process – but is well woth it. Having been around since 1985, Swing Out Sister’s Corrinne Drewery and Andy Connell (and former member Martin Jackson, who left after the first album “It’s Better To Travel”) have been consistently releasing albums soulful and jazzy, sunny and somber, with the old school vibes infused with new techniques- and they all work flawlessly.

I could not have done this alone, of course, to try to maintain my sanity. Shoutouts go to Shim, Joaquino, Macedonia, DJ Diva, James Madison, Alethea, Lisa, Ricky Mac, Paul E., TGrundy, Damone! and The BlacqueHoney Lounge for seeing me through this ordeal – well worth it.

Here we go.

Places And Spacecs

01 – Billy Ocean – Stay The Night
02 – Klique – I Can’t Shake This Feeling
03 – The Strikers – Body Music
04 – Instant Funk – I Got My Mind Made Up
05 – Donald Byrd – Places And Spaces
06 – Shuggie Otis – Inspiration Information
07 – Stevie Wonder – Smile, Please
08 – Brainstorm – We Know A Place
09 – Swing Out Sister – Breakout
10 – Kid Creole – I’m A Wonderful Thing, Baby
11 – Boz Scaggs – JoJo
12 – Isley Jasper Isley – If You Believe In Love
13 – Deniece Williams – Cause You Love Me Baby
14 – Tania Marie – Come With Me Now
15 – LaToya Jackson – Lovely Is She

This is probably going to go down as one of my favorites, as I had so many tracks that I wanted to drop in that were so diverse. “Stay The Night” has always been one of my all-time favorites, while Klique’s “I Can’t Shake This Feeling” and The Strikers’ “Body Music” had not been heard in quite a while, and put me in the mind of Instant Funk’s “I Got My Mind Made Up” which is also included.

Quintessential classics from Donald Byrd and Shuggie Otis are followed by a track from Stevie’s “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” that I literally played 4 times in a row, it was so infectious. “Smile, Please” is graced by the vocal improvisations of Stevie and background vocalists by Jim Gilstrap and Deniece Williams. This is followed by 2 uplifting tracks by Brainstorm and Swing Out Sister. Kid Creole then keeps the tempo going with the hilarious track “I’m A Wonderful Thing, Baby” which is followed by the soulful track from the one and only Boz Scaggs, “JoJo.”

After Boz Scaggs, I keep with he downempo theme with the Isley Jasper Isley track, “If You Believe In Love” which is one of my favorites from them. It’s followed by Deneice Williams’ “Cause You Love Me Baby” (which, coincidentally, is the second track here which she was a vocalist). This is followed by the smoothness of Brazilian artist Tania Marie, with “Come With Me Now” and is followed by a very nice track from LaToya Jackson which I happened to run across. The track “Lovely Is She” was written by her and her sister Janet Jackson, and in addition, has Patrice Rushen on keyboards, Paul Jackson, Jr. on guitar, and Nathan Watts on bass.

Think Swing Out Sister, Sade, Michael Franks, Matt Bianco - and then inject it with some lite jazz, pop and soul - and you've got Workshy.

If you are familiar with Swing Out Sister, Basia, or Matt Bianco, then I believe that you’re going to like this. As described on one of the fan websites, they are “somewhere in between Matt Bianco and Swing Out Sister, with a little bit of Sade and Burt Bacharach thrown in” which I agree with wholeheartedly – and personally I’d throw some Michael Franks lyricism and Incognito sensibility as well.

Workshy: One

Workshy: Two

19 – Got It All Together (Allure)
21 – Somebody (Allure)
36 – Out Of The Cold (Smile Again)
37 – You Go Your Own Sweet Way (Heaven)

During an IM conversation from the one and only Ricky Mac from the UK, he pointed me to the Youtube video for “Half A Mind,” which unfortunately has since been removed. The song affected me so much that I went to Spotify and was even more impressed by them and then went to Amazon and promptly purchased everything I could from them. With the assistance of Joaquino, I was able to find and purchase even more. The biggest impact that they had upon me was the fact that they have been out as long as Swing Out Sister and Matt Bianco, but I had never heard about them until now, more than 15 years. They’ve managed to infuse acid jazz, pop, lite soul, and jazz as well seamlessly. It was extremely, extremely difficult to pull this and keep the limit to 2 podcasts, which means that you will be hearing more from them as time goes on.

Now, trying to come up with an explanation of each track is extremely difficult as I like all of the tracks in the mix. ”Half A Mind” started the ball rolling for me, “Sleepwalking” kept it moving, and tracks like “Somebody,” “Got It All Together” and “I Get High” are just three of the tracks that keep me going. As you can see, the list goes on and on. I’d invite you to sit back, relax, and take a listen, and let me know what you think.

05 – Fatback Band – I Found Lovin’
09 – Jones Girls – Knockin’
10 – Con Funk Shun – Secrets
11 – SOS Band – High Hopes
12 – Cherrelle – When You Look In My Eyes
13 – Dynasty – The Only One
14 – Sade – Kiss Of Life
15 – Workshy – I Get High
16 – Sounds Of Blackness – Black Butterfly

There is a lot of good stuff here, as you can tell. Thanks to Mike Gee and Garfield, I was able to start this mix off with a cut I wasn’t familiar with, Come Let Me Love You from Jeanette Lady Day. That got me the push I needed to get this mix out that had been in progress with for a good while. The list actually has a couple of interesting vibes ths go-round. First, there are tracks there that are a tribute to late, but great, performers that passes on, as Vesta, Brainstorm (for Belita Woods), Babyface (for Deah Dame of Damian Dame) and Jones Girls (for Valorie Jones) are on here. Jam And Lewis are also prevalent here as there are three tracks they wrote from SOS Band, Cherrelle (which they also produced), Dynasty, and Sounds Of Blackness (which they produced as well). Two tracks from Britain are also represented by Sade and Workshy, which is a very little known group that you will hearing in quite a few podcasts in the near future, so stay tuned. I was even able to pull up some good cuts from Hugh Masekela, Con Funk Shun, Fatback Band, and of course Angela Bofill. Hope you enjoy.

This podcast had been in the back of my mind for the better part of 6 months. During the morning and afternoon drives from work when I listened to WCLK, I would always think of another song that could be put on the playlist. I’m glad to finally put it together and give props to both old school joints as well as the new, independent joints that never get played.

I kicked it off with Pide n Politix’s “Felt Your Love.” This track was one of my favorites off their album “Changes” which was released in 1991 with very little promotion.. When I realized that Colonel Red was actually the lead singer of the group, I was floored. One of Omar’s first tracks released, “Positive” follows up quite nicely, while ALS continues the positive vibe, slowin it down a little with the new track entitled “Walk.” Guru and Chaka (!) kick it up a notch, paving the way with “Closer To The Feeling,” from Incognito’s Tribes, Vibes, and Scribes LP.

I don’t think I can say enough about Swing Out Sister, Beady Belle, or Jamiroquai, three of my favorite bands of all time. SOS flows effortlessly with “Get In Touch With Yourself,” Beady Belle puts a tinge of drum-and-bass into the jazz-influenced track “Ghosts,” and Jamiroquai mellows it out with the wonderful track “Smile.” Those three tracks pave the way for an increase in tempo with JTQ’s “Free Your Mind” and the funky tune from Soil and “Pimp” Sessions “Jazzman In The Rave.”

This paves the way for Modernday Soothsayers who I had not heard of until Marcellus Nealy introduced me to it an reinforced the fact that acid jazz is still alive and kicking. You will be hearing more from him, and them, this year. Those who know me know how much I love Jhelisa, so it goes without saying that “All I Need” is in the mix. Big Muff follows up with “Feel What You Know,” followed by Esperanto’s “Sweet Feelings” and concluded with the D-Influence smooth track, “Running Away,” with a little help from Bluey.

Shoutouts go to Marcellus, Joaqquino, and WCLK who reinforce the fact that soul and jazz are in fact alive and well. Have requests? Send an email to ejflavors at gmail dot com. 13 – Sade – Keep Looking
14 – Anita Baker – Will You Be Mine?

After not being around for a while, it took a while to get over this hump of creating one that would appeal to the masses. I’m holding a positive light on this podcast. It pays homage to those who are gone but not forgotten, in particular Vesta and Belitta Woods from Brainstorm. Both were amazing vocalists who were, in my opinion, under-appreciated. I’ll continue to feature more tracks from those two in upcoming ‘casts.

Favorites from Donald Byrd (with a little help from the Mizell Brothers), Vanessa Williams (and yes, that is Babyface’s vocals AND acoustic guitar you hear on this fantastic track), Mac Band, Cameo, and Tony! Toni! Tone are featured. In addition, classics from Jackson 5 and The Sylveers precede one of my many favorite tracks from Brainstorm, the aptly titled Brand New Day. Have requests? 16 – KING – Hey

For this podcast to start off the year, I wanted to highlight some of the high points of 2011 while bringing in the goodness starting out this year. It takes to listen to two albums that started off this year with a bang. First Incognito’s Surreal is a definite pleasure, and while I could talk about this album at length, I would recommend that you pick it up. The track Ain’t It Time is a nice remake of the 1976 disco hit of the same name. Sy Smith continues the goodness with Messages From The Stars from her new LP Fast And Curious. I think I may have mentioned this before – but I’ll mention it again – Deborah Bond’s Madam Palindrome was one of my favorite albums of last year because of it’s consistency and it’s flow, all while sliding some production and vocals that aren’t afraid to swing to the left a little and then realign themselves nicely. The track 5:35 is a perfect example.

I continue with a track from Dego’s A Wha’ Him Deh Pon? LP. This is followed by a track from Towa Tei which I wrestled with for a bit because this track was 2009, and I (and I’m slightly embarrassed about this) did not know that he had not one, but two albums, since 2009. The album Big Fun was discovered, thanks to Spotify, and I found myself playing Taste Of You more times than I’d care to admit. Liquideep, the duo from South Africa, released an album that combines R&B, dance and house music rather nicely, entitled Fabrics Of The Heart, and Angel is one of my favorite tracks from that LP. I continue this with another track from Surreal with vocals from Maysa entitled Capricorn Sun. and a track from Robert Glasper’s Black Radio, destined to be one of the top 10 albums of the year, entitled Afro Blue, with vocals by Erykah Badu.

This podcast is also making up for lost time for what I consider a personal music transgression. One thing that I was remiss in doing was actually paying more attention to Twitter than I should have last year I had communicated with Teisha Marie and liked her vibe. Imagine my dismay when I went to the record store and actually saw an album by her. Yes, I should have had Addiction, and should have definitely had Unscripted n a podcast last year. The same holds true for Dezzaray Dawn’s Deep Waters, since I’ve actually had the EP and didn’t realize it until about a month ago. Continuing the blend is Szjerdene ‘s Lead The Way, which I heard on my ride home from Atlanta’s station WCLK, and I’m glad I did. Finally, making up for my transgressions from last year, I had to drop a single from Benny Sing’s ART that (like Towa Tei), I didn’t know about until I listened to Spotify.

I then end this with some great tracks. Solburn’s Children Of The Ghetto i a nice track from Natural High, which is followed by a track which is one of my absolute favorites from last year, Compton’s Somebody Elses Dream with vocals by Kafele. I then end tis with tracks that I was grateful to hear thanks to Gilles Peterson, Cleveland and Ahmed’s Sensitive and anoter one of my favorite tracks from last year from the trio KING, Hey.

I have to admit, this was a lot of work (and a lot of fun) to put together. Theresa and I spent a lot of time exploring both sides of love, much like the Lost and Found. Here’s our exchange in just how to present this:

me: writing up this mix, should have it published in an hour.

you got anythjing special you want to say?

Theresa: First off giving Thanks to God

I would like to thank my mom

my adoring fans

and my record company

Thank you

*kisses mic**

This is just a sample of just how laborious but hilarious this was to try to put together, and I owe it to her to keep me focused on it. Presenting the first side:

Creating these podcasts starts out with a bit of angst as I try to find cuts that I like from multiple vibes, and I usually try to start off with the house vibe (this is a long story that I will share later – I promise.) Lowtempo house tracks from Hardsound and Kloud 9 kick this set off quite nicely. The Escovedos, now known as The E Family continue with this wonderful track that is reminiscent of Earth Wind and Fire, aptly named Peace And Joy. Natalie Williams continues with her jam A Lil Wiser. Mark DeClive Lowe, calling in the vocal assistance of Bembe Segue and Nia Andrews turn the flow to the left with a soulful, synth track that instantly has become my favorite MCDL track to date, Push.

Old school heads will appreciate the next two tracks, one from the old school divas Shirley Jones and Jean Carne with Whatever It Takes and Silly, a former group from Japan which managed to surprise me with a nice tribute to DeBarge with their rendition of I Like It. 45 aka Swing-O released an album a couple of weeks ago so, of course, I was on it immediately, and selected Lucky Day from the album Stop! Look!Listen, another great album.
Goapele follows the mellow vibe with Break Of Dawn. Mind Combined from Korea follows Goapele with the mellow, smooth track, Something’s Special.

Strange Fruit Project never ceases to amaze me with their flow. as is evident from the CD A Dreamer’s Journey with Gotta Move. Colonel Red from the UK, known for his soul singing, also adds a little hop-hop flair with his cut, Pressure. Rina drops a head-nodder from the album Our Kingdom

You gotta love Krystal Hardwick’s vibe when you hear No Other Way. The album A Tale of Two Fish is along the same vibe, so pick up, you won’t be dissapointed. The same can also be said of Compton’s Record By Record, from the album Compton’s Soul, another sublime CD. I then end on the mellow tip as always, with two of my all-time female singers, Lalah Hathaway with the title track of her CD, That’s Where It All Begins, and Maysa Leak with her title track from her CD as well, Motions Of Love.
I will be putting additional information into the tracks above, so check for more updates. Got requests? Send an email to ejflavors at gmail dot com.
