100 Things, Volume 3

Volume
one
was done, and volume
two
was assembled. It’s getting a little more challenging now. The third
installment…..

100 Things About EJ, Volume 3

51. The phrase "Jack be nimble, jack be quick" does not apply to me.
I am heavy-handed and I will not try out for a marathon. I am very
good with hammers though. That, and slamming car doors. It’s not that I’m mad
at you, it’s the power of the swing.

52. I constantly have 15 things on my mind. If you think I’m ignoring you, please
believe that I am not. I’m also not ignoring the music in the background. Or
the computer screen. Or something I need to do for work.

53. Even though I was definitely into computers at the time, my best score in
the 8th grade was Mythology. My grade score? 110.

54. I am not a romantic person. Ask anyone. My idea of a date
is a good dinner and a movie and that’s it. In fact, if both the dinner and
the movie are at your house (or mines), that’s even better. I know about those
things called flowers and candy, and I can do that, but I need a put in a reminder
into my scheduler, and allow extra time for me to set up and prepare. For instance,
I have to get ready for Valentines Day at least a month in advance. Just thinking
about it makes me cringe.

55. Yeah, I’m a Star Trek fan. All of ‘em. My favorite series is The Next Generation,
but I would be lying if I said I’ve missed a single episode of any of them.

Does This Mean I’m A Ghost?

Carla
said she needed friends
. Apparently, so do I. Oh, and a body too. At least
I got spirit, right? If you need me, I’ll be hiding under the bed…..

100 Things, Volume 2

Continuing on. With comments on
Volume
I
in place, it’s time for:

100 Things About EJ,
Volume II.

26. When I go clothes shopping, it’s a four-step approach: I go in, find what
I need, purchase the clothes and go. I’m not looking for bargains then – I’m looking
for an immediate need for clothes. Don’t try to keep me in there for more than
an hour. For malls, it’s an hour and a half – unless you feed me while we’re in
there.

27. I’m okay when I have cash in my reserves, but when I don’t, all bets are off.
If I’m broke I will be one evil man and lock myself in the house. No restaurants,
no record stores (which is bad in and of itself), and minimal conversation. Leave
me alone with music and I’ll be fine.

28. I have this thing about British acts, but I’ve never been to Britain. For
instance, two bands that always make me smile are Loose Ends and D’Influence.
I have all of their songs (and the remixes), have seen both in concert, and would
gladly have them back together. Then there’s Incognito, Sade, Paul Weller, The
Style Council, Carleen Anderson…..

29. One of my self-evaluations that always perplexes people is that I believe
I’m one of the most boring people you’d ever meet. In group settings, I listen
more than I speak. It isn’t because I’m shy – I just don’t think I have much to
say.

30. Both my father and grandfather died from cancer. Both of them smoked also.
Now you know why smoking around me is annoying. I can deal with it, but only for
so long. Don’t smoke in the house. That’s like signing your own death warrant.

100 Things, Volume 1

You know, I promised I’d do this in my 101/1001 (which is now updated – I’ve made pretty good progress).
I originally stopped at 20 and thought I was being a wimp. But then, I started
catchin’ up on some blogs and lo and behold, Humanity
Critic had done his too
. He was the inspiration to push on, so I’m gonna drop
it- 25 at a time.

100
Things About EJ,
Volume I

1. I was born on Long Island, New York, in the town of
Westbury, where I
spent the first 8 years of my life. Think about it: New York in the 60s
and 70s?
You know it was goin’ on, right?

2. Way back in the day, I can remember listening to a lot of soul
music,
especially when my mom was giving parties in the living room and I was
supposedly asleep in my room. That’s why these Old
School Wednesdays
are so good to do.

3. E and J are indeed my first and middle initials, but I’m sure you
could have
guessed that already. It’s not too hard to figure out what they are,
either.
I’ll even tell you if you feed me. See number 14.

4. Yeah, Flavors is my last name. Surprised? Don’t be. It was
Stockholm back in
the 1800s. EJ Stockholm
doesn’t sound nearly as good as EJ Flavors.

5. For all intents and purposes, I am a full-on nerd.  Believe
that.

An Appreciation

Most times, if you ask, I’d tell you that the reason that most of my blogging is musically oriented is because I often believe that I don’t have much to say. Sights, sounds, work, life and
love around me are pretty straightforward. Some people might tell you I’m
a mellow kinda cat, and for the most part I’d like to believe that’s true. You
can even hear me a referred to as listener instead of a speaker. Every so often I have cause
to reflect on how good life is, as I’m sure you do. I don’t express myself that
often because most of the time there’s other people around me with a whole lot more to
say, and I just enjoy listening, hearing, vibing, being. That’s my thing. I’m
sure you feel me, right?

Well, the last couple of weeks were a little different if you didn’t get that
from the vibe all around. While the headaches were a warning sign, I kept going, until I was literally out, as in unconscious, for 48 hours,
after having that grand
mal seizure
. Seems that Thursday and Friday from week before last, they
poked and prodded and tried to find out what was goin’ on inside my head. Literally.
Apparently when I was awake I wasn’t happy about the IV equipment (and from
what I understand, I was trying to take it out of my arm), the fact that my computer
wasn’t near me, and most of all, I couldn’t listen to music or find
interesting television. Of course, when work calls you on the weekend while
you’re lying down on the hospital bed and you’re telling ‘em you will be working
from home for a little bit because of this seizure, you get a lot of support-
even when the workaholic worker in you is trying to find a way to make
up for these hours on your unwanted vacation, or figuring out what’s gonna be
on your next Old School Wednesday, or In Rotation, or what you’re gonna have
on Flickr, because life is not supposed to stop…just like I’m not supposed to stop!

You also get a chance to find out that some people are actually are reading
what you’ve got to say- which isn’t much because, ultimately, you’re trying
to get through these life situations behind and continue forward. What you don’t
expect is that there are comments waiting, IMs, emails, phone messages
and the most unexpected of all, music, plants and flowers. I can name one- and only one- dissapointment
that I had while I was laid up. While that one person may or not be contacted,
I can honestly say that this has shown me that I’ve got way more friends than I’ve ever imagined, that
I don’t regret walking through my blogs everyday even though I constantly believe that I’m insanely behind,
because I still get to see and vibe through things on the web every day that pale in comparison to what one book could show me.

In short, I really do want to thank those that have reached out and said something,
have knocked me across the head with love, and have kept me up and carrying
on, because even though I’m sure I’m behind in a lot of things, there’s quite
a few of you who know how to nudge me along and keep me moving, even though I’m convinced I haven’t even moved a muscle.

What I’m sayin’ is- there’s love out there especially to you. If I haven’t specifically said so, know that it’s definitely my head and not my heart and I have every intention of giving
you the same appreciation you’ve given me.

Thank y’all for showing love to me. In fact, I’ve
been feeling so good about it, I don’t believe I’ve even expressed myself vocally enough.
Leave me an email, comment, whatever, if I haven’t. We’ll exchange phone numbers, whatever you
want. I’ve got love for you even if you can’t see it.

And that’s the truth. Forreal.

Don’t stop.

Yesterday, I sent a text message to my cousin at Keesler
AFB
to check and see if she was okay. Early this morning, I heard my Sidekick
vibrate. She sent a text message back saying that she was alright. I immediately
called her back.

"Hey, EJ, know anybody who wants to buy a Lexus? Sure, it’s flooded out
but will make a nice ornament in the front yard!" We both laughed for 60
seconds, because as they say, laughter is good medicine, especially considering
the circumstances. You gotta love her.

Three things she wanted right now:
- $500 to get her hair done;
- Triple
Plays from Chili’s
;
- Someone to purchase relaxer for her hair- cause she has a nappy afro.

I asked her how she was feeling. "I can’t break down right now, I havent
because I haven’t interacted with some families, I defintely will, but right
now, I just can’t." I feel her. While there are no commercial phone lines
up, there are two lines that they’re able to use for military purposes. While
there are people that have broken their legs while tripping down the water-filled staircases
in the dark, and $6 million worth of medicine lost on the base, it’s been surreal
for her. Imagine looking out the window when a storm is blowing, see 20-foot
waves come in, take whole houses, and then retreat. People on the base know
that there are more than one hundred people missing, but won’t be able to
recover the bodies until the waters recede.

Like people’s lives along the Gulf, our conversation is cut short because she’s
got to go back to work, and go raise the flag to half-mast. Four months from
now, she’s going to be relocated, but until then, she’ll be working.

Every day.
Katrina didn’t stop.
Therefore, she can’t stop.
People
around us ain’t gonna stop
.
Therefore, we
don’t need to stop
.

In Rotation: 09/02/05

Living life in the south such as it is has it’s highs and lows. While there’s
often good times that we like to share, things are not so great this go around.
I’m sure I could list a multitude of links about the tragedy that’s happened,
I’m glad to see that some
of the bloggers
around the way are safe and sound.

The devestation is not only in Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and even Georgia.
While there are complaints of
gas prices skyrocketing
, we need to also be thankful that it’s not our house
that needs to be rebuilt, or family members who are unaccounted for. While my great-aunts have not been located, our family has been assured that they have been taken care of. I was able
to talk to one of my cousins, who is stationed at Kessler
AFB
down in Mississippi. She’s told me that they don’t have water at the base, that their houses are flooded or destroyed, and that they’re bringing in 4,000 troops
because people in Biloxi don’t have water. Ten Marine ships are coming in but
it will take them a week to get there. There are people trying to get into the
base trying to force their way past troops, and the residency doctors are being
evacuated. As she says, however, it could have been a lot worse. My great aunts and friends from New Orleans have lost everything, but they are thankful that they’re still alive. My hearts go
out to everyone
who has
been impacted by the disaster.

Be thankful, and give
what you can
. It’s important to keep moving forward. Let’s keep rotating.

B12: Chillin’ In The Summer – Literally

EJ and Gordon Chambers

Originally uploaded by ej flavors.

B12: Chillin’ in the Summertime. Literally. From KB’s
Bakers
Dozen
.

Beyond the music, there’s not much to tell, but let’s see what I can do. The
life of EJ boring? You decide.

1. My weekend started officially on a Thursday, when I figured I would choose
my two stay-at-home-days back to back. Wednesday night seemed to be surreal
because I started to feel like I was living in the middle of winter while it
was 92 degrees outside.
2. While I was in the middle of working, trying
to finish my in-rotation
and trying to fight this bad cold, I read
a post from Sister Outsider
which echoed some of the same sentiments Jason
had about being disengaged
. I felt this as well, since now my blogging feels
more like infotainment than actually engaging in conversation about how I really
feel. Is this just a phase, or am I really consiously trying not to put myself
out there in front of a wider audience? I’m wondering how others feel about
that as well.
3. Ironically, this was also mentioned on Wednesday afternoon when I had one
of the best lunches ever with Tiffany
B. Brown
. I think we all echo the same sentiments that blogging has definitely
changed. These are the kind of lunches I live for, where there’s more going
on than just blogging. The conversation was so good, I think another blogger
get-together definitely needs to happen.
4. During Thursday, chills turned to fever and then back to chills. Never mind
that I was supposed to be taking it easy on Thursday – I ended up working four
hours of overtime and caught up on my Star Treks and my CSIs…
5. …and discovered two new shows that have consumed my curiosity – It’s
Always Sunny In Philadelphia
and Starved.
Those two shows are the best premieres I’ve seen in quite a while. Why you ask?

6. Well, first you’ve got It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
which had a
bar turning into something more than mixing drinks
, which personally I thought
was hilarious., and more close to home, even though most of the reviews I’ve
read don’t believe so, and….
7. …then you’ve got Starved which, of all things, has men
using a scale in a restaurant that’s usually just for weighing carrots
in
the pilot.
8. I figure I’d make up for it on a Friday and work a half day…which didn’t
happen. Working from home again on a Friday was a full day. You too can work from
your bed, with two computers, cell phone, and a box of Kleenex.
9. I got an email and a phone call that Gordon
Chambers
was in town and needed a little assistance, so I went down to hang
out with Gordon. It was probably the break I needed. I was glad to had gone,
had a great time, but just to be safe, I went back home.
10. I finished up my in-rotation, then took a nap. I got outta bed and stopped
by a party that a friend told me
about
and had a great time even though I stayed there for an hour and hung
out with friends I hadn’t seen in years….
11. …and then, true to my promise, went down to go see Fly
Girl
and Champ down at the Mike Phillips
concert at Apache Cafe. As Fly Girl stated, that concert was an awesome one.
12. Sunday evening I chilled, had dinner with Prime,
and then put my votes in for the Black
Weblog Awards
. I suggest you do the same.

Fall asleep yet?

Artist Greggy

It’s not about music, it’s about the blogosphere.
While there are some who are going through their trials and tribulations of personal issues and working their way through them, there’s also some who’ve witnessed personal tragedy. I’d like to offer my condolences to Artist Greggy and his loss. More information is here.
Greg can also be reached at gregorybroadnax at msn.com. Much love to the Broadnax family.
Thanks to Lis for bringing it to the forefront.

Back In The Day and Five: The Meme

Back in town from Philly, and this is an easy way to start it out. Carla
made me do it:

Ten years ago: Lived and loved pretty hard.
Five years ago: Celebrated the new millenium.
One year ago: I was celebrating a new birthday and having
a good time doing it.
Yesterday: Was in Philadelphia, Pennsyvania at a friend’s house
and in Wilmington, Delaware at a BBQ, listened to enough old school music to
do two radio blogs, watched more episodes of Good Times than I should have,
and decided to not go to a concert and hung out with friends instead.
Today: Took a plane back home, talked on the phone with a couple
of friends, took a long nap.
Tomorrow: I’ll be back at work and catch up on television
that I missed this past weekend.
5 snacks I enjoy: Sun Chips, Krispy Kreme Donuts, Cashews,
Chocolate Chip Cookies, Little Debbie’s Nutty Bars.
5 bands that I know the lyrics of most of their songs: Not
much of a lyrics type of guy, since I listen to so much music, but I recite
lyrics to a lot of Mint Condition, Prince, The Time.
5 things I would do with $100,000,000: Payoff the house, all
remaining bills, open up a computer consulting firm, set up a charity, and save
the rest.
5 locations I’d like to runaway to: In no order: Chicago,
The Bay Area, London, Hawaii, Toronto.
5 bad habits I have: Dirty clothes where they shouldn’t be,
forget to clean the sink after shaving, driving until I see the gas light come
on instead of filling up in advance, purchasing music like a crack fiend, reading
blogs when I should be sleeping.
5 things I like doing: Watching TV, reading blogs, working,
purchasing music and listening to music.
5 things I would never wear: thongs, bras, polyester, lycra,
rings.
5 TV shows I like: The Amazing Race, Star Trek series, 4400,
Battlestar Galactica, CSI.
5 movies I like: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Incredibles,
New Jack City, Fight Club, The Matrix.
5 famous people I’d like to meet: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis,
Prince, Bill Clinton, Bill Withers.
5 biggest joys at the moment: Television, reading, hanging
out with friends, listening to music, and being a technogeek.
5 favorite toys: As a kid: Spirograph, Lite Brite, Perfection,
Lego, GI Joe.
5 people to tag: Todd,
Obi, Luke
Cage
, **RPM**, and
Terecico. Anyone else
who wants to play, please go ahead.

a shift in focus/questions and answers

Before I give the answers to questions asked during the last couple of weeks,
I’d like to make a little statement and do a little polling.

Without going into details, my work and life schedule has primarily been in
a state where most of my blogging is done when I’m at home. In other words,
being able to read other blogs at work is much easier than actually blogging
at work. Because the break/fix to the radio blog for Old School
Wednesday had to be done during work hours, I received backlash for having to
do so in the workplace. Because of this, I was a little shaken and a little
discouraged in actually finishing work on an In Rotation this week.

I have an In Rotation in progress for this week, but because of the way my week
at has been, I wasn’t able to finish it in time for this morning. I’m thinking
of switching my In Rotations to either:

1. Every other Friday; or
2. Posting one on the weekend.

Readers/listeners out there, which schedule would you vote for? I like to be able
to provide a mix, since doing radio blogs and sharing music is something I really
enjoy. I’d like to hear from you. Thanks.

….and now to answer questions.

Saturday Random 5: I Need To Get Out More, Volume 2

Terrance tagged me and so
did KB
. I’m a sucker, yet again, for a music meme. I did it before…what’s
the harm in doing it again? Taking it from the top…

1. What is the total volume of musical files on your computer?
Apollo – 85.0 GB and rising.
Hermes – 32.8 GB. Most (if not all) of them are on Apollo.
ejPod – 2 GB. Doesn’t take too much music to work out to.

2. What song are you listening to right now?
Avalanches – Since I Met You.

3. Last CD I bought?
Afterdark
- Chicago
from the rekkasto, Natalie
from Amazon.

4. Five songs you listen to a lot and which mean something to you:

Just five? Let’s make it 10.

The newer cuts:
Ivana Santilli – You’re So You. Played this cut to death after Todd kept
singing it, and singing it, and singing it….
Teedra Moses – Caught Up. My favorite cut off the album, don’t care who tells
you anything different. It’s gotta be the guitar and the keys in the high register.
It’s intoxicating. There’s another one, but I won’t present that one yet.
Avalanches – Frontier Psychiatrist. This track is wild! That
boy needs therapy!
Michael Johnson – Do It. He’s so smooth.
Platinum Pied Pipers feat. Steve Spacek – No Worries. Anything from PPP right
now thrills me. This one grew on me and now won’t go away.

The old school/not so new cuts:
Shuggie Otis – Inspiration Information. I can’t describe it. I think I
played this song to death, seriously.
Soul II Soul – Missing You. Ditto on this one. IMHO one of the best British
cuts from back in the day out there.
Bill Withers – Let Me Be The One You Need. Love the way he whines.
Chuckii Booker – You Don’t Know. One of the cuts that never got airplay.
Troop – You Take My Heart With You – One of those cuts that they should have
released.

Can I go outside now?

a quick ten….

I swear, it’s been mad busy for me in the last week or so, but I finally got
a reprieve. I finally got to see Star Wars, and finally get to catch up on my
blog reading. That’s two out of three….now I’ve gotta catch up with the memes.
I’ve been tagged.:

From Metaphyzxx:
10 of my favorite things, in no particular order:
10. Headphones at work.
9. Welch’s Berry Punch. Three cartons a week, easily.
8. Listening to MP3s in my car. It’s the hotness.
7. Coming up with playlists.
6. Mornings. Watching the sunrise is mad cool.
5. Nathan’s beef hot dogs with cheddar cheese. Don’t hate.
4. My laptop, Hermes.
3. Reading blogs. Some people read books, me? I’m a blog fiend.
2. Sweatpants and t-shirts.
1. Springtime weather. Not too hot, not too cold.

Seven people to call out on this one: Will (done),
Frank,
Tony, Todd (done),
Yolie (done), Kelvin (done),
and KB (done), since he called me
on one
I did before
. I’ll have to do an updated one soon. It’s about that time.

EJ- The Moon Man!!!

The Moon Man

Originally uploaded by ej flavors.

You know how it is when work gets you, where there’s stuff you really want to do but there’s not enough time in the world? Well, that’s me, today – seven days after Friday the 13th.

I had every intention of doing an In Rotation this week, but then I thought that maybe I was too mellow, that I needed to do more upbeat stuff. For example, the radio blog I was going to throw up was going to include Platinum Pied Pipers, Matt Bianco, Ivana Santilli, Rahsaan Patterson, and more….but then I thought that after the Old School Hip Hop arby that it would be better if I just let people marinate on that instead of going ultra-mellow as I’ve been kinda feeling after the weird work week I had. For example, I was supposed to see Star Wars, and I was all set. We were all sitting down, and the movie was about to start and then…. then….

…my pager went off, I got stuck on a conference call, and as the movie started I was on my way to my car going back to work. Sometimes life is like that, you know?

Especially since I’ve hit the cover of Jet Magazine!

HOLLA!

.

1. With two meetups scheduled for the weekend, got off of work early Friday
and rescheduled work for the weekend to get ready for the shindigs.
2. Barley’s:
free internet but still no outlets for laptops. Talked to DJ, the manager: "Your
name is EJ? Cool. Call me Monday. Maybe we can work something out…"
3. The band that played had an…interesting vibe. After a couple of drinks,
though, everything sounded good…just ask the lady with the flask Yolanda….
4. With Yolanda, Will
(man, what a great guy! Pound pound!), Saga,
Karsh, Brown
Sugar
, Ray,
and Xquizzyt1,the
drinks flowed, and so did the french fries. Brown Sugar, pass me the ketchup…
5. Because of the meetup, I of course, missed the finale for Enterprise,
but got home just before midnight. Thank goodness for TiVo.
6. Saturday, I stayed in the house and chilled to get ready for the evening
at Chequers….

7. ….to be met with extreme dissapointment as only three of us were there.
We ate and went back home. (Big ups to Fave. My man called on his way back outta the city, and apologized for Friday…)
8. Received a call from D-Nice:
"Aren’t you supposed to be here? Carmen
is here!" Dag. Due to the dinner, I missed her.
9. Thought about doing brunch, but due to Saturday’s events and the Sunday work
schedule, I elected to stay home instead to watch Don’t
Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood
.
10. I put in a call to KB: "Yo,
you done walkin
‘?"
11. Put together a CD by request. "Mr. Cohen, your CD is ready."
12. Synopsis: next blogger’s meetup? I won’t be planning it. Lesson learned:
more participation if meetups here are impromptu, not planned. Memo to self:
add entries to Brown Bloggers.
