Teena Marie: Ivory Queen Of Soul

Teena Marie: Ivory Queen Of Soul

I’ve been called Casper, Shorty, Lil’ Bit
And some they call me Vanilla Child
But you know that don’t mean my world to me
‘Cause baby, names can’t cramp my style.

Ask anyone where they were and they first heard Lady T, and they’re responses will be varied, but one thing’s for sure….they’ll tell you that she could belt out her songs and that if anything, she was definitely unforgettable.   She may have been called many things when she was growing up, but when all is said and done, she’ll always be Lady T.

There has been so much to say about the lady since she transitioned that I’d be duplicating everyone thought of her that have already been said.  I felt it was important to celebrate her life through the recording’s that she’s done.  Believe me, it was time well spent.  I also had a lot of help, thanks to the folks on Twitter and Facebook, helping to make sure I made this as comprehensive as possible. Many, many thanks to them.  It should also be known that I was not alone in my quest.   The one and only T. Grundy from RIBS, has a wonderful tribute to Lady T spread across two mixes, which are available here.   There are more coming, so look back here during the next couple of weeks for more.  Rest in peace, Teena- you will always be in our hearts.

As usual, I look forward to feedback Got requests? Send an email to ejflavors at gmail dot com. For those who’d like to subscribe to these podcasts, enter this link manually into iTunes. Also, please be sure to check out on GROOVMNT always keepin’ you in the loop. Take it light.

There’s been a lot of things going on right now, and I’m playing catch up and handling things like Teena Marie’s transition (mix coming soon).  It was. however, important to get this out, so without further ado – my view of 2010 from an aural perspective.

I really wish  I had time to type it all out, but I did manage to say a little more  in this podcast.  In two volumes, I managed to touch on tributes, tracks from the past, new school, J-Pop, instrumentals, and alternative music.  That being said, there is no set genre here – just what I perceived to be sonically stimulating in 2010.  Please note: there is no acid jazz or Teena Marie tracks- they will be posted seperaately.  Also, there is a post of 2010 in memorial, so stay tuned for that.   As usual, I  look forward to feedback   Got requests? In trying to come up with this podcast I discovered that I had way too much music to choose from, so I just let it flow and stashed the rest away for IR 26 which will be coming in about 2 weeks. There’s much to say, but I will keep this as brief as possible, since it’s impossible to say how great each track is. I started with Richard Earnshaw, Incognito, and McDL (better known as Mark DeClive Lowe) with Sy Smith. “Circles” with vocals by Nina Jayne is the second cuts that made me sit up and pay attention to the album “In Truth.”

The next track is the head nodder “The Biggest Sin” (and if you didn’t nod your head to it, be sure to let me know!) It’s followed by the instrumental “Clickstrodinaire”
by Aroop Roy. Following this instrumental are two tracks from former members of Jamiroquai (and great artists in their own right), bassist Stuart Zender and drummer Nick Van Gelder. “AZUR” is also grace with vocals by Don-E while “Game Of Love” has lead vocals by Mazen.

Five absolutely sublime tracks “Catchin’ Up,” “It’s You,” “Rollercoaster,” “Average Fruit,” and “Chinese Silk” are followed by a singer/rapper named Driis. If the name doesn’t sound familiar to you, his real name Idris Elba will. I end the set with two mellow tracks – “I Need Music” and “Daydream.”

Resurrection

So, you might be wondering….where is EJ and what the heck has been going on with this site for the last week? Well, there were quite a few adventures and mishaps. Note: this may get a little technical at times, so don’t sweat it

Just after my transition period started (also known as the end of employment), my site went down (bad_httpd_conf issue). After more than 24 hours, I finally heard from tech support that the site was being copied to another server. Most everything was copied but there were still some fundamental pieces missing from the puzzle.

Also during the same time, there was an attempt to upgrade the installation (from MT4 to MT5). The installation failed and there has been little help in fixing the problem. This is when I decided to get the help of Todd “Big-La” Kelley to work his magic and help converted the site over to WordPress (while trying to keep as much intact as possible), which is why you see this new site before you. Here’s the lowdown:

1. All of the entries you see before you work now.

2. All podcasts are still available.

3. Radio Blogs (popups to play the tracks) are now gone (yes, all of them). I will try to resurrect all of the ones from 2010, but all of the other ones (from 2004-2009) I am sorry to say, are gone. I can resurrect them upon request, but no promises. (Update:  Radio Blog Club is now closed down so now I am afraid I am missing source code as well.  Until I can find it, Radio Blogs are on a hiatus.)

4. The “About EJ” and “In Real Time” tabs are now on the site. They’re both still being worked on. “About EJ” will be a mini-autobiography, while “In Real Time” will consist of near-real-time updates about what’s going on, including CBox (quick shout outs) and Twitter Thoughts (yep, I’m on Twitter also).

So, after 5 days, we’re back in business, but the site is still being worked on, so you’ll see some changes, but steps are being taken so this issue never happens again. My apologies for this downtime, and major major props for Big La for pulling it together. Any comments or suggestions? Feel free to let me know.

Take it light.

Since work and school have been an absolutely busy experience, trying to pull out rotations is a challenge – even doubly shoo with trying to keep the Old School Wednesdays moving. Let’s see if I can keep up with the music this year, which is undoubtedly much more active (and interesting) than it was last year.

I have always been interested in Bah Samba, and have used them on a couple of occasions. After doing some research, I saw that they have been out for more than 10 years, and that one of the vocalists was no other than Alice Russell who is phenomenal both on the turntable and in person. It prompted me to pull out All I’ve Ever Wanted without hesitation. I’ve followed this from Dira, a new artist produced by Bluey from Incognito. The track Gotta Get Through To You is off of the CD Something About That Girl. Georg Levin then sets the groove with vocals by the one and only Clara Hill with The Better Life.

Yahzarah’s Change Your Mind is a great track which was produced by Nicolay (who incidentally produced the entire LP, The Ballad of Purple St. James). This is followed by Silhouette Brown with a little help from Lady Alma on the track Casualties of Honey. Blue Six follows this up with the bass-thumping You Used To Rock. We then slide into the old school vibe by sliding into the German collaboration by the name of Cool Million with the track Just Dance with Noel McCoy.

I was able to get my hands on Marcell And The Truth and I was very impressed with his LP.. Lost In The Moment is one of my favorite tracks off of the CD. Symbols. Special thanks to L. Michael Gipson got alerting me to this release. Zo! slides in with a track from Sunstorm entitled This Could Be The Night with Erro, Darien Brockington, and Big Pooh. This is followed by PJ Morton’s I Need Your Love and Russell Taylor’s Mad 1 More Night from the CD Confessional.

Showya. a great track from Darien produced by Soulpersona, is one of the most frequently played tracks by yours truly. This track is followed by Past Present Future by Angel Grant, an artist fro the former Perspective Records (remember Lil’ Red Boat?) I found this track while listening to her previous album, aptly entitled Album. The track comes from her current album entitled My Journey Back. Eric Lau then gives us the lovely track Always Will with vocals by Musinah and Kaidi Taitham .

After Eric’s track, Incognito follows with vocals by the one and only Chaka Khan with The Song an unquestionably solid track that will be heard for years to come. This is followed by Princess Freesia, an artist to watch out for, with the soulful track Love, which keeps the goodness flowing. I conclude this with a track from Zo!, entitled All Is Well With Love, one of my absolute favorite tracks from the LP. This track is graced by the vocals from Chantae Cann,

Shououts go to Ricky McCarthy, Paul Eversley, Soulpersona, Zo!, and L. Michael Gipson.
