10 – Zo! Featuring Darien Brockington – The Highways Of My Life (Pts. 1 & 2).

2009 was one heck of a challenging year, and I was really ready to be done with it with a quickness. Because of so many things going on that interfered with am appreciating music for periods of time, I almost felt like I missed a lot, which is why this list seems to be really short. I’m usually able to come up with more than 10. I’m anticipating that this year was an exception, rather thn the rule, and that 2010 will be nore “normal” as they say.

It was a good thing seeing Nicolsy, Zo!, and Darien in concert year. It seems tht they have been principal arrtists each year, and I’m very happy about that. Naturally 7 is a group that has been around for a while that I was glad to learn about this year. Their style is definitely new and I do not recall hearing anyone like them. That’s always a great twist. The same can also be said about Jaspects who have taken Jazz and infused it with Electronica, which in my humble opionion, works splendidly.

I didn’t get a large infusion of hip hop last year (which will change this year, I;m sure) but Mos Def and Jay ARE relally brought some very great tracks to the forefront. N’Dambi and PPP infuse soul like only they can, and I expected nothing less from them.I was pretty late to the game with Soulpersona and Deborah Jordan. but I plan to make up for it this year. Needless to say, I’m really looking forward to 2010.

Admittedly, this has been long in coming but due to employment issues and the dearth of music, I had been reluctant to try to generate one. Perserverence and forethught prevailed. Somce new music has been a challenge, I went back into the archives and was able to pull a few gems to help with the flow of new music.

Tortured Soul’s Did You Miss Me? LP has always been in rotation, as well as The Sunburst Band’s spectacular instrumental Far Beyond. Unifunk is great blend of jazz and electronica, which I have always been wary of – until this album The Polkadotted Stripe. Jay ARE, consisting of John Robinson and J. Rawls has just recently come out with their album Jay ARE – 1960′s Jaz Revolution Again. Their track Relax Your Mind had me during the first 10 seconds of the song.

The septet Naturlally 7, a group who provides more than just simply a cappella with their music, is a force to be reckoned with. Their "Vocal Play" provides both sining and instrumentaton. My biggest regret is that I’ve been sleeping on them for so long. Chali 2Na and Elshi do hip hop justice with When Will I See You Again, and Don-E continues his abikity to groove with Stay Awhile.

It stands to reason that Down To THe Bone and Roy Ayers jam for 7 minutes with Good To Me, followed by Jazzin
Park’s New Sun. Ledisi’s Say No is from her new album Turn Me Loose which is essential for fans of Ledisi.

I went back in time for the next two tracks. Seek’s mellow funk Some All Night Daing is from their album from 2004, Jurney Into Day,while King Britt and Vikter Duplaix’s track I’ll Do It For You was released in 2001. I compete the wind-down with Liquid Spirit, who also has a track in Volume 21, continues the goodness with Higher Ground, while Ashley Thomas, also present in Volume 21, ends he belnd with A Take if Two Cities from the album of the same name.

Thanks for waiting so long – I’m hoping to start doing this monthly- time permitting.

When I learned about MJs death, I received a couple of podcast requests. After seeing so many reflections of Michael and his performances through the late 70s through this decade, I felt that some of his early career hadn’t been considered. This is when I called on Todd Kelley’s knowledge to be able to touch on some of the early work by The Jacksons and Michael, as well as tracks from the 80s which weren’t necessarily the most popular, but definitely memorable. This, course, is like grabbing only a few dollars out of a big moneybag. Trying to fit them all on one CD is not easy- there is so much we weren’t able to touch on- but I hope you find this sampling of Mike’s spirit and talent them all on one CD touches you in some way. Shutouts go to KB and Fave as well or their touches on this ‘cast. Got requests? Send an email to ejflavors at gmail dot com. I had an absolute blast in Austin, TX at SXSW and it gets better every year., believe me. It gave me a running start on this rotation. The grooves here are plentiful. Platinum Pied Pipers blows the lid off the bo with On A Cloud, instant classic in my mind. This coes from the new CD Endurnce. This is followed up by Ashey Thomas – who, in my mind, has one of the best CDs so far this yar, A Tale Of Two Cities. I wanted to include two tracks on this rotation, but I’m going to keep adhering to the rules here…just be sure you’ll hear more of him this year. The same can be said of Lisa Shaw’s new CD, Free- a solid followup to Cherry. To keep the keep the vibe going, I had to coninue with soid trancks from Tortured Soul’s new CD Did You Miss Me? and Jody’s Candlelight.

Liquid Spirit follows up with Could It Be You?, from one of my favorite albums from last year, Music, while Sunlightsquare keeps it moving with Never Felt So Good. Erik Rico keeps the flow into Slakah The Beatchild’s Emjoy Yourself (which by the way is also included in Nikki’s Soulrific Episode #45. Zo! teams up with Asylum 7 with Overdue Process, from the album of the same name. I then mellow it out to a close with Mabanua’s Deam About You, Lasonya Gunter’s Sittin’ Here, and my man Randevyn’s This Morning.

I’m definitely going to be at SXSW next year, believe that. There are way too many people to give thant’s to this go-round, just know that I’m definitely planning on making it next year, and makig sure I stay a little bit longer.

01 – D-Nell – This Thing
02 – Q-Burns Abstract Message – This Time (featuring Lisa Shaw)
03 – Don Blackman – Holding You, Loving You
04 – Amerie – Why Dont We Fall In Love
05 – Carl Thomas – My Valentine
06 – Giovanca – Pure Bliss
07 – Incognito – I Love What You Do For Me
08 – Ephraim Lewis – Drowning in Your Eyes
09 – Blaze – All That I Should Know
10 – Gaelle – Repetition
11 – D’Sound – Tattooed On My Mind
12 – Adriana Evans – Looking For Your Love
13 – Beanfield with Ernesto – Close to You
14 – Ivana Santilli – You’re So You
15 – Alexander O’Neal – The Morning After
16 – Amp Fiddler – Unconditional Eyes
17 – D Infuence – Falling

I decided to not try to focus on any particular genre, but tracks that made me feel great when I first heard them- and each time I listen to them. I started out with This Thing from D’Nell because the track was my favorite track of 2004 and upon hearing this track, I was hell bent on absorbing all that is D’Nell. I haven’t looked back since. The same thing can also be said about This Time when I was trying to discover all that is Lisa Shaw. Don Blackman’s old school track (that I actually heard off a new-school CD) brings us to throwbacks from Amerie (only 2 minutes, 49 seconds long), and Carl Thomas (scratching blended in with a wonderful string section hook).

Giovanca, Incognito (with Maysa on lead), and Eprhaim Lewis (RIP) with their Amsterdam and UK tracks are followed by New Jersey’s Blaze and one of my favorite tracks from this house group, All That I Should Know. This is followed by Gaelle’s Repetition (which is one of the simplest, yet most-layered tracks that simply say "I love you."). Oslo’s D’Sound has a track entitled Tattooed On My Mind that is followed by arguably my favorite Adriana Evans track from her first LP, Looking For Your Love, with it’s luxurious arrangement of horns strings, and xylophones accentuated by her vocals. Timeless.

Beanfield’s Close To You from the album Seek introduced me to Ernesto. I followed this up with Ivana Santilli’s You’re So You which came out the year before the background vocalist’s first album was released. (I believe you know him as a guy named Dwele). I kept it going with Alex’s The Morning After, Amp Fiddler’s Unconditional Eyes with vocals by Stephanie McKay, and capped it with the last track off of D-Influence’s London CD, Falling. Sarah Anne Webb’s vocals in the final 60 seconds gets me every time.
