01 – Vikki Love With Nuance – Take A Chance
02 – Lillo Thomas – I’m In Love (Longer Luv Mix)
03 – Skyy – Show Me The Way
04 – Gladys Knight & the Pips – When You’re Far Away
05 – Princess – Say I’m Your #1
06 – Pia Zadora – I Don’t Wanna Love
07 – Lalah Hathaway – Bad By Myself
08 – Level 42 – Love Games
09 – After 7 – Ready Or Not
10 – Steve Arrington – Sugar Momma Baby
11 – Patrice Rushen – Feels So Real (Won’t Let Go)
12 – Teena Marie – Portuguese Love

I had Nuance and Skyy on my mind last week, and Lillo was a natural progression with I’m In Love. Gladys and Princess flow into Pia Zadora’s track I Don’t Wanna Love (produced by Jam and Lewis, along with When You’re Far Away) which was only released in the UK. Lalah’s Bad By Myself (produced by Chuckii Booker) is followed up with Level 42 and After 7, flowing straight into Steve’s Sugar Momma Baby, Patrice’s Feel So Real, and Teena’s Portugese Love. 05 – One Way – Cutie Pie
06 – Steve Arrington – What Do You Want From Me?
07 – Cameo – She’s Strange

09 – Prince – Ballad of Dorothy Parker
10 – Gwen Guthrie – Thrill Me
11 – Lisa Stansfield – Wake Up Baby
12 – Lalah Hathaway – A Moment
13 – Alexander O’Neal – Sunshine

Shoutouts go to AMC for requesting me to pull out Skyy’s Call Me. Forgot how much I loved that track. On top of that, Janicke Jam had me pull out One Way’s Cutie Pie which made it sweeter…then G-Fresh kept it goin’ with You Wear It Well! In addition, as I was playing Cameo last week, some coooool people, MisterJT, Monique, and Tiffany killed me with singing She’s Strange through Friendfeed which positively made my week. I don’t think I need to mention the rarely heard cuts Thrill Me and Wake Up Baby to keep me flowin’ on the mellow. Got requests? Send an email to ejflavors at gmail dot com. OSW: New Jack Swing, Volume 7

I get by with a lil’ help from my friends. Seventh time’s the charm:

Old School Wednesday: Swing, Volume 7

01 – Basic Black – Nothing But A Party
02 – Alyson Williams – Sleep Talk
03 – Monie Love – Work It Out
04 – Jane Child f Teddy Riley – Don’t Wanna Fall In Love
05 – Al B. Sure! – Channel J
06 – Newkirk – I Desire
07 – Today – You Stood Me Up
08 – Chris Bender – I Knew
09 – Guy – You Can Call Me Crazy
10 – Big Bub – I Don’t Mind
11 – Damian Dame – Exclusivity
12 – Father MC – Treat Them Like They Want To Be Treated

After pulling out six new jack swing blends, it was nearly impossible to come up with a seventh one. I almost scrapped it, but thanks to some good help, I was able to pull it off.

Basic Black’s Ain’t Nothin But A Party along with Alyson Williams’s Sleep Talk, with an interjection with Oran "Juice" Jones, kicks this off with a bang. Those two are followed up by Monie Love’s Work It Out and Jane Child’s Don’t Wanna Fall In Love, remixed by the one and only Teddy Riley. From his album Private Times and The Whole 9,
I had to pull out Al B. Sure’s Channel J, with rap by Chubb Rock. Next is Newkirk’s I Desire from the album Funk City, which I came across last month and almost lost my mind. Today’s You Stood Me Up is followed up by another track I hadn’t heard in a while, Chris Bender’s I Know. Guy’s You Can Call Me Crazy (with vocals buy Timmy Gatling) is followed up by Big Bub’s I Don’t Mind.

Cooling it out, I had to roll in Damian Dame’s Exclusivity and end with Father MC’s Treat Em Like They Wanna Be Treated. Shoutouts go KB for kickin’ it strong with the Basic Black, Father MC, and the Today suggestions as well as the one and only Chris Bender track, Macedonia for his absolute greatness for the Alyson Williams track, and Janicke Jam for again giving me the energy I needed.

01 – Michael Jackson – Off The Wall
02 – Heatwave – Jitterbuggin’
03 – I-Level – Give Me
04 – Imagination – Who (Tell Me Who)
05 – Loose Ends – Stay a Little While, Child
06 – 52nd Street – Tell Me How It Feels
07 – Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield – People Hold On (New Jersey Jazz Mix)
08 – MC Lyte – Eyes Are The Soul
09 – Stevie Wonder – That Girl
10 – Al B. Sure – Oooh This Love Is So
11 – The Mary Jane Girls – All Night Long
12 – Adriana Evans – Trippin’

Of course, I had to start off with Michael and Heatwave, then push through with tracks from the UK – I-Level, Imagination, Loose Ends, and 52nd Street. Coldcut’s People Hold On featuring vocals by Lisa Stansfield was released before her first solo LP. This was a track I had not heard in more than 15 years, so I was grateful to get my hands on it. MC Lyte’s mellow Eyes Are The Soul is followed by Stevie’s That Girl, Al’s Ooh This Love Is So, and Mary Jane Girl’s All Night Long. The last track was from Adriana’s first album which came out in 1993, entitled Trippin’.

Shoutouts go to G-Fresh for the Stevie Wonder and Heatwave recommendations, Macedonia for the I-Level request, and Janicke Jam for kicking up MC Lyte for me.

OSW: Another Star

The last two weeks were definintely a challenge. I’m officially back to normal (so to speak). Here we go!

01 – The Jacksons – Lovely One
02 – Switch – Next To You
03 – Stevie Wonder – Another Star
04 – Quincy Jones – Ai No Corrida
05 – Ashford And Simpson – It Seems To Hang On
06 – The Escoffery’s – Look Who’s Loving Me
07 – James Perry – April Lady
08 – Wally Badarou – Chief Inspector
09 – Vertical Hold – You Can’t Go Wrong
10 – Chuckii Booker – Games
11 – Starpoint – All Night Long
12 – Frederick – Gentle (Calling Your Name)

The Jacksons, Switch, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones were a natural progression for me, particulary because of the horn arrangements of each one. Also, Another Star happens to be one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs. Ashford & Simpson’s great It Seems To Hang On is followed by The Escoffrey’s Look Who’s Loving Me, a track I had not heard in more than 15 years.

Shoutouts go to G-Fresh for James Perry’s April Lady, a solid track. This is followed by the instrumental Chief Inspector, by Wally Badarou, one of the forces behind Level 42. Vertical Hold’s You Can’t Go Wrong is followed by Chuckii Booker’s most popular track, Games. These tunes are followed by Starpoint’s All Night Long and Fredrick’s Gentle (Calling Your Name), brought to the forefront by B.

OSW: Hang Tight

They say that 41 is the new 31. I don’t know about all that, but I do know it’s my birthday today. Before I start talking about something else other than music, let’s drop the Old School Wednesday given to us by Mr. G-Force and Yvonne, cause they’re SO good at it.

10 – Deniece Williams – Cause You Love Me, Baby
11 – Tashan – So Much Love
12 – Vesta – Sweet, Sweet Love
13 – Shirley Jones – Do You Get Enough Love

I’m grateful to G-Force and Yvonne for subscribing goodness this time around, particularly with Jesse Johnson,
Alex O’ Neal, and especially songs from Keni Burke and Bobby Thurston – two tracks that I had never heard before. As you can tell, they are a formidable duo. Suffice it to say, you will be hearing more from them. Believe that.

I have yet to get the actual count right of how many OSWs have actually been done here, but
the count is somewhere around 194. Back in the day, the OSWs were a creation of the one and only, KB. I did a couple from his suggestion, then a couple became 5, and then he passed the torch to me. I still can’t tell you to this day why I haven’t just stopped doing it. Masochism? Craziness? Probably a little, but mostly because of the love I have for music. KB helped me expand that vibe, and to that I’m very grateful for it. But what’s even better are the people that helped me with this with their comments and emails, including Ms. Alex, Thierno, Wayne, VPayne, Qamar, James Madison, GrantLove…and the list goes on and on. (By any means, if your name was left out, it’s not because of lack of love- more than likely lack of memory…definitely let me know.

During OSWs, since I had so much time on my hands, I also did radio-blogs of songs I liked – no matter how different they were. The count of those is around 65 with no signs of slowing down. Podcasting was an offshoot of that, beginning without vocals, and then when I discovered that people actually vibe to someone whose vocals are reminiscient Mickey Mouse except in an MP3 format, I kept on doin’ it, getting slightly better each time. If it weren’t for the bloggers Honey, Lis, Todd Kelley, Nikki, and TGrundy, I would have given up a long time ago.

…but here I am, still doing them, which of course begs the question is, "whatever happened to that thing called blogging?" Well, things combined with my weekly podcasting like Friendfeed, Twitter, and Plurk to name a few, I haven’t felt the need to blog about anything. I’m going to attempt to change that because when all is said and done, I still do miss what blogging used to be back in the day. In fact, I’ll start this by breaking the ice – let’s get to know EJ a little better. If you have questions about me, post the question here or email me directly at ejflavors at gmail.com and I’ll be sure to answer them. I’ll also try to give you a little more insight into my life, which isn’t a whirlwind, but more like a steady stream with a big rock here and there. So there you go. Give up a happy birthday to ya boy.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming. You won’t hear my voice much in the podcast, because of time constraints, but I’ll be back next week, definitely. Thanks to G-Force and Yvonne for mixin’ it up quite nicely. For those who’d like to subscribe to these podcasts, enter this link manually into iTunes. 13 – Earth, Wind & Fire – Love’s Holiday – Brazilian Rhyme

As usual, there’s a lot I could say about each track (because they’re all good), but the ones that stand out the most to me are Giorge Pettus for that Kashif influence on the track, SOS Band, the Five Star Philly Remix for Let Me Be The One, and EWF for the Brazilian Rhyme at the end. I would also be remiss in mentioning the supreme ears of Jeff Hinz (check out his Friday Night Dance Party) for Skipworth & Turner and Loose Ends, and Theresa for the Debra Laws track, All The Things I Love, which I had never heard before.

04 – Carrie Lucas – Show Me Where You’re Coming From
05 – Dynasty – Here I Am
06 – Rockie Robbins – An Act Of Love
07 – Quincy Jones – Razzamatazz
08 – Light Of The World – Aspects
09 – Slave – Just a Touch of Love
10 – Mr Fingers – What About This Love?
11 – Stevie Wonder – I Love Every Little Thing About You
12 – Michael Wycoff – Love Makes Me Sing
13 – Atlantic Starr – Love Me Down
14 – Chaka Khan – Tight Fit

I’m a huge fan of Jam and Lewis, and really love Change’s Change Of Heart. Turns out I wasn’t the only one. Mr. Fresh absolutely loves this track also. Since Change was the first track. I thought it would be perfect to continue with another Jam and Lewis smash, SOS Band’s The Finest (with accomanying vocals by Alexander O’Neal). Evelyn’s wonderful I’m In Love is followed up with Carrie Lucas’ severly underrated Show Me Where You’re Coming From, by request from Mr. Fresh and blessings from G Fresh and Yvonne. I then follow it with one of Dynasty’s best singles (and quite possibly my personal favorite) Here I Am.

I heard Rockie Robbin’s An Act Of Love for the first time last week and I think I’ve played it every day so far. Thanks to the killer horn section, I thought it would be appropriate to ease on into Quincy’s Razamatazz, with great vocals by Patti Austin. I follow with Light Of The World’s Aspects. While I was planning my mix, DJ Diva, the mixtress of R&B, had this track as the leadoff single of one of her podcasts, so I had to make sure I included Just A Touch Of Love.

Larry Heard, aka Mr. Fingers, was clearly the first DJ that vibed me to house music, so I had to place the very first house track I ever purchased, What About This Love? I then follow up with my favorite track from Music Of My Mind, I Love Every Little Thing About You, with a nod from Mr. TGrundy of course. Michael Wycoff’s track Love Makes Me Sing was a natural progression from Stevie, which then continues the vibe into Atlantic Starr’s Love Me Down, with wonderful vocals by Sharon Bryant, and capping it off with Chaka’s Tight Fit, thanks to Thierno.

I’ll be giving more details In the podcast (coming soon), like the significance of Light Of The World, SOS Band’s The Fines, and Evelyn’s I’m In Love. If you’re so inclined, take a listen. Special thanks again to TGrundy, DJ Diva, Mr. Fresh, Thierno, G-Fresh, and Yvonne. For those who’d like to subscribe to these podcasts, enter this link manually into iTunes. 10 – Carrie Lucas – What’s The Question
11 – Alicia Myers – If You Play Your Cards Right
12 – Atlantic Starr – More, More, More
13 – The Jacksons – Push Me Away

Phyllis Hyman was put in the mix first via a request from Virginia, while D-Train’s The Shadow Of Your Smile had been in the back of my mind for weeks. Sure Shot is one of the two tracks that were released by Tracy Weber shortly before her death. May she rest in peace. Surface’s Stop Holdin’ Back, released in 1983, is followed by one of my favorite tracks from Touch, Tingle. Ian Foster’s Heaven is followed by Bobby Womack and Wilton Felter with Inherit The Wind. Rockie Robbin’s track Time To Think is followed by a track from Switch entitled You’re The One For Me.

Carrie Lucas’ What’s The Question, my favorite surprise so far this week, is followed by Alicia Myers, Atlantic Starr, and The Jacksons.
In the podcast (coming soon), I give a little more detail about Switch, Windjammer, and more. If you’re so inclined, take a listen.
