This has been a joy to make as usual.  While there haver been many tribute to Prince, there weren’t many that played to his jazz funk side, as is prevalent in Madhouse and The Family. The Hue featuing Ladybug Mecca, Kero One, and Damani bring hip hop into the mix, while  Phny Ppl injects some insanity into the mix as well.  Tracks from Daniel Crawford and Albun Janoska were very new to me and I look forward to hearing more from them as well.    Hope you enjoy.

Grundy and T. Bell for helping to make this into a reality.

15 – The Dangerfeel Newbies – Always With Me
16 – Uptown Funk Empire – I’m A Manchild
17 – Isaac Aesili – I’m All In featuring Rachel Fraser

This was an absolute joy to put together, especially for the summertime.    Maysa starts off with a house track, which in and of itself is an amazing, based oh her vocal prowess.  Soulperfreesia from Australia/England, continues the good vibe with “Saving All My Kisses.”  If Teena Marie were alive today, she’d be nodding her head in approval. Another house vibe track from  Tortured Soul paves the way for tracks from Carmen Rodgers and Conya Doss, both of who have great albums.  Carmen’s “Stargazer” and Conya Doss’ “Seven” captured me on the first listen and so it was difficult to marrow down one track from each of them.  I managed to do it, because I’m certain that there will be other tracks in the 2015 Year In Review podcast.

The a cappella group Naturally 7 keeps the groove going, followed by the UK group Sola Ros, who I just heard about this year, so I’m still in assimilatioin mode with them.  Old School artists are making a comeback, as observed by Charlie Wilson’s track (produced by Jam and Lewis) and Cool Million with vocals by Gavin Christopher.

After those tracks, the sound of New Zealand  starts blending in.  I was late to the party, having heard  Funkommunity CD “Chequered Thoughts” a year after it was released.  The CD easily became one of the best in this decade so far.   Earlier this year I had discovered that they had changed their name to Sorceress, and yes, had released a CD.  The new album “Dose” is every bit as good as “Checquered Thoughts” as is demonstrated by one of my favorite tracks, “Te Kano.”  After doing lookups of Isaac Aesili and  Rachel Fraser, other great music started revealing itself.  It  was then that I had  learned about Iva Lamkum, another phenom from New Zealand  It gets better- from them I learned about Sola Rosa from England, Potatohead People from Vancouver – and trust me when I tell you it doesn’t stop….stay tuned for upcoming podcasts for more of their goodness.

Thanks to Radio BSOTS, Saun an Starr are in the mix, and thanks to two great DJ’s from right here in the city of Atlanta, The Dangerfield Newbies are also present.   Judith Hill’s soulful voice makes the day brighter with “Love Trip” and UFE’s “Manchild”  brings old school mellow into the mix.  The  set ends with a track that I constantly have on repeat, “I’m All In” by Isaac Aesili and Rachel Fraser.

Drops by  DJ Diva – The Mixtress Of R&B, Big La – Todd Kelley, and Macedonia of BSOTS,

This year has been cataclysmic on both personal and political fronts.  This had been on the back of my mind for a while.  so it was cathartic to just get it out there,

Kicking it off with Groove Collective was par for the course. he track always motivated me.  I then felt that I needed a little Towa Tei in the mix, since there are several tracks of his that give that acid jazz, mellow feel.  The fact that Amel Larrieux and Vivian Sessions (!) are in there is a major bonus.  Jazzanova and Atjazz are followed up with Beady Belle’s “Lose And Win” and F-Mob’s “Be Bop 2 Hip Hop” – shoutouts go to Foster and McElroy.

Tower Of Power and The Super Phonics  pick up the pace, which are then followed up by D-Influence and a little Red Hot + Blue from Jungle Brothers.  Jamiroquai and Q-Tip continue the vibe.  Freakpower, Izit, and Swing Out Sister bring the podcast to a mellow close.

Shoutouts go to Marcellus, Joaqquino, and WCLK who reinforce the fact that soul and jazz are in fact alive and well.   Have requests? Send an email to ejflavors at gmail dot com. For those who’d like to subscribe to these podcasts, enter this link manually into iTunes. Take it light.

14 – Bell And James – Only Make Believe

I’m back in the groove!  After having the name “slipback” on lock for the past 7 years, I decided to rename the Old School Wednesdays to the term as it is more flexible (no longer just Wednesdays) but also allows me to broaden the base a little (not just “old school” tracks.)  Thsnks to Kasey F. for coming up with that term years ago.

The tunes here, in my opinion, some of the masterpiecves of the late 70s, 80s, and early 90s.  from Mystic Merlin (with Freddie Jackson) to Kano (!) to Curits Hairston, among others.  Also, as this podcast was being developed, the house svengali Frankie Knuckes passed away, which is why the mellow house track “Rain Falls” has been featured.  I also need to give special, special thanks to Vox Efx for keeping me going via Spotify. The man knows his music.

As usual, life’s changes for the better slow me down a little but I’m glad to be back on track.  It helps that independant artists like Teisha Marie, Sandra St. Victor The Foreign Exchange, and Zo! have come up out with new albums this year that give the reassurance that music is not dead.  Make no mistake, artists such as Mayer Hawthorne (a track where I keep waiting for Donald Fagen to come out of behind the curtain), Janelle Monae (with the one and only  Esperanza Spaulding), Robert Glaspaer (with Brandy as the vocalist), Omar (with Caron Wheeler) , and Quadron continue to shine through.

My respect for the independent artists here in Atlanta continue to grow as I began to realize that artists Gwen Bunn and Brittany Bosco have been around for a good while, but have gotten little recognition. I’m hoping they get more exposure in the future.  Thanks by word of mouth and underground promotion, I was alerted to Water Seed’s “Wonder Love 2” CD  and Margot B’s EP “Live At Hazlett Theatre, both great sets. Major shoutouts to Hasan Brown.  I must also give major props to the people I follow on Soundcloud because if I had not followed them, I would have never known about RC& The Gritz, who I learned about exactly 12 hours before I scheduled time to work on this podcast.   Their duet with Erykah Badu is timeless.

It’s always a sad and reflective moment when you find out one of your favorite singers or musicians has passed away. However, as music lovers once the sadness ebbs and the reflection takes over, what you’ll probably do next is pretty straight forward.  You’ll go to your music collection of that artist and start playing some of your favorite songs and/or albums that they released during their career, especially the ones that contain those special memories from the “soundtrack of your life”.  If you are on Facebook or one of the other online social networks, you might publish a Status or a Note about your appreciation for the artist and invite your friends to do the same and/or talk about their favorite songs or albums from the artist. If you are a DJ or a podcaster, you’ll probably end up making an “In Memorium” mix (or mixes) from the artist’s catalog in a show of respect and appreciation for their musical talent and the pleasure it has brought you over the years. As I said, pretty straight forward, right?

Unless that particular artist happens to be George Duke.

When George passed away on August 5, 2013, I did exactly as outlined above. Started playing some of my favorite G.D. songs. Posted on Facebook and invited my friends to share some of their memories of George and his music. And then I started to my research on George’s career to gather together his music to make an in memoriam mix.

That is where it became not so straight forward.

To say that George Duke had an amazing career as a musician would probably qualify as one of the top 5 understatements of the year. When I checked out the History section of the George Duke: Online website (http://www.georgeduke.com/history.html) is when I realized that:

1) a single mix to honor his work would not nearly be sufficient
and
2) this project was going to take a lot longer than I originally thought.

For those of you who don’t know, George Duke was so much more than a prolific keyboard musician. He was also a composer, singer and producer in just about every mainstream musical genre you can think of. In addition, he worked with numerous acclaimed artists as an arranger, music director, writer and co-writer, record producer and also (early in his career) as a professor of music. George has over 30 solo albums to his credit, let alone his work as a sideman (playing in another artist’s band) or as a writer and/or producer of other artist’s songs or albums. And I have not even mentioned his work scoring music for films and TV shows! He’s played with everybody from Miles Davis to Frank Zappa, and he’s produced a very diverse collection of artists, not only people like (his cousin) Dianne Reeves, Rachelle Ferrell, Joe Sample and Al Jarreau but also artists like Denise Williams, Jeffery Osborne, Raul De Souza, gospel group Take 6, Marilyn Scott, Flora Purim, Iyanla Vanzant and Kirk Whalum just to name a few.

Just like we could all listen to George’s music for hours (and never hear the same thing twice), I could write/talk about his music for hours. However, I’ll conclude with this: “Thanks for the music and the memories, George. You’ll always be a part of the soundtrack of my life.”

– TGrundy
