OSW: Think Twice

I was listening to some Erykah Badu tracks the other day, prepping for the New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War album, in addition to tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, which prompted me to pull out Donald Byrd....

01- The Brothers Johnson - Stomp!
02- D Train - You're the One for Me
03- Carrie Lucas - Show Me Where You're Coming From
04- Body - About Love
05- The System - This Is For You
06- BB&Q - Genie
07- Donald Byrd - Think Twice
08- Raydio - More Than One Way To Love A Woman
09- Zhane - Sending My Love
10- Garry Glenn - Cause I Love You
11- Debarge - Time Will Reveal
12- Cameo - Feel Me
13- The Jones Girls - Children of the Night
14- The Emotions - Flowers

I had to work my way through a rough work week, and Stomp! really helped me get through it, which is why I had to start off with the track. Continuing it with the soulful sounds of James "D-Train" Williams and Hubert Eaves III was natural to me because it allowed me to slow down just a little bit but still keep the groove goin'. I have to thank my friends Roney and Mr. Fresh for extolling the virtues of Leon Sylvers III and Carrie Lucas, which is what made me seek out Show Me Where You're Coming From, a track that should have gotten way more exposure. I was familiar with Body's Touch Me Up, and when I couldn't find the track in time, I went back to the Body LP. After I heard the track About Love, I had to add it to the blend.

I don't think I need to say much about This Is For You, as I keep running into more fans of The System each time I play a track from them. Last week's OSW introduced Curtis Hairston, so I had to drop my favorite track from BB&Q, Genie, which showcases his vocals. The superb instrumental Think Twice (ATCQ's Footprints, anyone?) leads to Raydio's More Than One Way To Love A Woman, one of the tracks released from the Rock On CD. Zhane's groove Sending My Love leads the way into Gary Glenn's Cause I Love You a very nice track off the GG album. After Gary, I felt it appropriate to follow up with DeBarge's Time Will Reveal and Cameo's Feel Me. The last.fm group Chi Town Soul had a spirited discussion and a vote between the vocals of The Jones Girls versus the stylings of The Emotions, which led me to pull these tracks out, ending the OSW with a positive vibe.

There's more in the podcast of course , so if you're inclined, take a listen. Hope you enjoy. In addition, there are two new sites that have gotten my attention in the last week: SoulCommune, which is the official portal to a growing community - the soul community, and last.fm, the social music revolution which keeps track of everything I listen to in near-real time. You can keep track of me here at SoulCommune, or here at last.fm. For those who'd like to subscribe to these podcasts, enter this link manually into iTunes. YOU ROCKED THIS ONE!!! Carrie Lucas?!? WHAT!?!

All of these jams bring back the good memories....Carrie's "Show Me.." is the move... I love the grooved out mid tempo jams.

"This Is for You" brings me back to the Jr. High days..Stomp was released I believe back in 1980? Always good to hear C. Hairston and BB and Q.
Great, great great stuff here, Man.

I know it ain't analog but I'm going to wear this mix out!

Thanks for posting these gems! Don't ever consider your work to be done in vain. We all appreciate it. I know I do!

EJ... It's always a one-two punch with you. You know my weakness for Kashif & The System. Thanks for including one of these 2 pioneers in this week's OSW. I do like the rest of the playlist.

Cheers

So funny that you included "Show Me Where You're Coming From" because I've been looking for that song for like a million years and JUST found it last week, and it was that song that was the catalyst for me wanting to do a WHOLE mix. That song brought back so many memories and made me want to create a whole playlist around it, which I did. I would always ask people if they knew it by saying, "It sounds JUST like 'Girl I Got My Eyes On You' by Today, but replace it with 'show me where you're coming from.'" I've always loved both songs. Nice. =)
