February 2008 Archives
I was listening to some Erykah Badu tracks the other day, prepping for the New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War album, in addition to tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, which prompted me to pull out Donald Byrd....

I had to work my way through a rough work week, and Stomp! really helped me get through it, which is why I had to start off with the track. Continuing it with the soulful sounds of James "D-Train" Williams and Hubert Eaves III was natural to me because it allowed me to slow down just a little bit but still keep the groove goin'. I have to thank my friends Roney and Mr. Fresh for extolling the virtues of Leon Sylvers III and Carrie Lucas, which is what made me seek out Show Me Where You're Coming From, a track that should have gotten way more exposure. I was familiar with Body's Touch Me Up, and when I couldn't find the track in time, I went back to the Body LP. After I heard the track About Love, I had to add it to the blend.
I don't think I need to say much about This Is For You, as I keep running into more fans of The System each time I play a track from them. Last week's OSW introduced Curtis Hairston, so I had to drop my favorite track from BB&Q, Genie, which showcases his vocals. The superb instrumental Think Twice (ATCQ's Footprints, anyone?) leads to Raydio's More Than One Way To Love A Woman, one of the tracks released from the Rock On CD. Zhane's groove Sending My Love leads the way into Gary Glenn's Cause I Love You a very nice track off the GG album. After Gary, I felt it appropriate to follow up with DeBarge's Time Will Reveal and Cameo's Feel Me. The last.fm group Chi Town Soul had a spirited discussion and a vote between the vocals of The Jones Girls versus the stylings of The Emotions, which led me to pull these tracks out, ending the OSW with a positive vibe.
There's more in the podcast of course , so if you're inclined, take a listen. Hope you enjoy. In addition, there are two new sites that have gotten my attention in the last week: SoulCommune, which is the official portal to a growing community - the soul community, and last.fm, the social music revolution which keeps track of everything I listen to in near-real time. You can keep track of me here at SoulCommune, or here at last.fm. For those who'd like to subscribe to these podcasts, enter this link manually into iTunes. The blend is kicked off with two dance/house tracks - one with Ralf Gum w/Monique Bingham and another from Alix Alvarez with Nate James. I have got to say that I've been graced with more house music...more GOOD house music....than I have for a while. Chris Ballin- whose voice should sound familiar to you (Beneath The Surface should ring a bell)- comes forward with a track from Do It Right called Full Time Lover. Reel People march right out of the gate with a tune from their just-released Seven Ways To Wonder CD entitled Amazing.
Simbad then comes forward with Rob Li with Here We Stand, which brings us to a nice hip-hop track from the 410 Pharoahs entitled Real Fresh which I'm definitely feeling. This is followed by a track from DJ Junior's Excursions CD, entitled All The Beauty by Donn. Samantha James keeps it flowing with another track from Rise entitled Right Now, bringing us to Stacy Epps (Madvillain anyone?) with Floatin'.
I don't think I can say enough about Beady Belle. Her Belvedere CD is not to be missed. India.Arie is graced on the upifiting track Self-Fulfilling. Rainbow Soul keeps it flowing with Vaceo's Room For All, flowing right into Albright's great reworking of a track we remember from back in the day, Tainted (Love).
Former D-Influence members Kwame Kwaten and Steve Marten
deliver the goods with the D'Vas After Hours CD, which has a stellar track with lead vocals from no other than Caron Wheeler called Still Running. Finishing up the podcast on a great note is Jean Graw & 9th Wonder with Love Thirst and Kia El Amin's track Creative from DC Soul In The Cut's album Share A Moment of Love.
As usual, take a listen to the podcast for more info. Special thanks to Foundation Media for keepin' me aware of good music, particularly the 410 Pharoahs and Jean Grae. Take it light.

11- Gregg Diamond Bionic Boogie - Hot Butterfly
12- Stevie Wonder - Ngiculela-Es Una Historia-I Am Singing
13- Phyllis Hyman - Gonna Make Changes
14- Alexander O'Neal - Crying Overtime
Here I Am is an underappreciated track from Dynasty, produced by Leon Sylvers III. The accentuation of the guitars and percussion is a nice touch. Jump To The Beat, produced by Narada, is a great track as is Razmatazz, presenting lead vocals from Patti Austin.
The triple dose of England soul is given by Lisa Stansfield, D-Influence, and Imagination, which then slides in the track from Heatwave's Candles CD, Turn Around. The instrumental track by Chuck Mangione is then followed by a dose of the Gap Band and Greg Diamond's Bionic Boogie with Hot Butterfly-- listen carefully for the lead vocalist. The tracks are then completed with Stevie's Ngiculela, Phyllis' Gonna Make Changes, and Alex's Crying Overtime. Shoutouts go to the last.fm group Chi-Town Soul - led by the fearless leader BMG, and of course DJ Diva, who gave some great input when my mind was all over the place.

13- Pockets - You And Only You
14- R.J.'s Latest Arrival - Heaven in Your Arms
15- Shanice - Do I Know You?
16- Rene Moore - Never Say Goodbye To Love
To make this blend stand out, I wanted to ensure that none of the tracks here were in Valentines Day 2006 or Valentines Day 2007, were predominately from the 80s, and were not considered major hits upon their release, but were very memorable to me. For instance, not many people remember Curtis Hairston Liz Hogue or Pockets, but were vocalists in their own right. In addition, there were recording artists that were part of major acts that came out with their solo LPs, such as Chris Jasper, Ernie Isley, and Rene Moore. While all of these tracks are memorable, I've got to say that Bill Withers, Liz Hogue and Lisa Stansfield stand out in my mind.
There's more in the podcast of course , so if you're inclined, take a listen. Hope you enjoy.
