Last Days of 2007

| | Comments (2)
Looks like I've gotten so wrapped up in the festivities of the Christmas holidays that I didn't allocate enough time for the Old School Wednesdays, concentrating instead on friends, family, and just having a bloody good time. Not to worry, these will be coming in the next 7 days:

- Old School Thursday - Epilogue, 2007
- Best of 2007 - The Singles
- In Rotation, 2008 - Volume 1

Best wishes to all, and to all a safe and prosperous holiday season!!!

In Rotation: Volume 13

| | Comments (5)

Guess Who’s Back? There's a double dose of music here for this rotation. Before I expand on that, however, I need to bring your attention to KB (a.k.a. Buccho), a man who's not only a great friend but who's got amazing skills, has dropped a holiday heater quick mix [click to play or right click-save as to download] to give you a taste of his upcoming podcast series. Please download and take a listen, to give your ears some holiday cheer.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. This took me awhile, but luckily I've been able to listen to music while at work. You know it's essential to stay awake and keep abreast of all the good music out there, as well as pay homage to those from years past. Presenting:

Rotatin' : Volume 13, December 2007.

01 - Samantha James - Breathe You In
02 - D'Sound - Sweet Music
03 - Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators - If This Ain't Love (Don't Know What Is)
04 - Anthony David - Something About You (Feat. Cekoya)
05 - Little Brother - Two Step Blues feat. Darien Brockington [Explicit]
06 - Breakthrough - No Game (feat. Jneiro Jarel)
07 - Ne-Yo - Angel
08 - Nicola K - Until The Morning
09 - Soul:ID - Is This Luv?
10 - Peter Hadar - Xplosive
11 - Rahsaan Patterson - Deliver Me
12 - Jua - Lost Paradise
13 - Kipper Jones - Put The Music Back In Love
14 - Wade O. Brown - Wholeheart
15 - Alice Russell featuring Natureboy - Sweet Is The Air
16 - Lina - Waiting

Samantha James' track Breathe You In is one of my favorite atmospheric tunes of the year, and puts me in the mood for Naked Music which is always good for me. I have to admit that I am very late to the D'Sound vibe. But hey, Sweet Music is one of my favorite tunes off of their album Talkin' Talk. This is followed by Nicole Willis and The Soul Investigators track If This Ain't Love (Don't Know What Is). The vibe is then continued by the drop of Anthony David's wonderful remake of Level 42's Something About You.

I jump into a little hip-hop that I personally enjoy, and that's Little Brother's Two Step Blues featuring Darien Brockington (check out HoneySoul's interview with him here). This is followed by Breakthrough featuring Jneiro Jarel's No Game. Special shoutouts go to Macedonia for alerting me to the goodness that is Jneiro.

Next up, we're graced by a track from Ne-Yo that I personally enjoy called Angel, followed by one of my favorite cuts from Soul:ID, Is This Luv? from their LP Sex, Love, And Philosophy. Peter Hadar's lyrically riveting Xplosive (from Memories of the Heart) is followed by the equally enjoyable Deliver Me from Rahsaan Patterson's Wine And Spirits LP.

Thanks to Mr. Fresh, I was alerted to a new artist named Jua who has an album named Anticipation. If the track Lost Paradise is any indication, this album will be one of the standout albums of 2008. My man Kipper Jones follows up with a track from K.I.P. (Keep It Pushin') called Put The Music Back In Love. Following up these two tracks are a stellar one from Wade O. Brown, entitled Wholeheart.

I end the blend with two mellow cuts that touch me, Alice Russell featuring Natureboy's Sweet Is The Air, and Lina's Waiting from the Stranger On Earth LP.

I hope you enjoy KB's mix as well as this one. The next rotation of the year is my favorite 20 tracks of 2007. Take it light.

OSW: Sheila E. and Company

Exactly one week ago - 12 December 1957 - was a wonderful day - the 50th anniversary of the birth of Sheila Escovedo.

Old School Wednesday: Sheila E. and Company

01 - Sheila E. - The Glamorous Life
02 - Prince & Sheila E.- Love Bizarre
03 - Andre Cymone - The Dance Electric
04 - Chaka Khan - I Feel For You
05 - Jesse Johnson - Free World
06 - Jill Jones - Mia Bocca
07 - Sheila E. - Shortberry Strawcake
08 - Sheena Easton - Sugar Walls
09 - Prince - Uptown
10 - Tevin Campbell - Round & Round
11 - Bangles - Manic Monday
12 - Wendy And Lisa - Honeymoon Express
13 - Prince - The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
14 - Sheila E - Hold Me

This mix is definitely Sheila E., with tastes of the Minneapolis sound throughout the mix. Two of the most popular tracks from Sheila E., The Glamorous Life and Love Bizarre start off the mix, followed by Andre Cymone and Chaka Khan. The seldom-heard track from Jesse Johnson, Free World continues into a track from Jill Jones' very underplayed and unappreciated eponymous CD called Mia Bocca.

Sheila E's instrumental Shortberry Strawcake is followed by Sugar Walls and Uptown. Tevin Campbell's Round and Round is followed by the popular hit from the Bangles written by Alexander Nevermind entitled Manic Monday. Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman follow with a track from their first CD, Honeymoon Express, while a track from my personal favorite CD Sign of the Times follows with The Ballad of Dorothy Parker. The set ends with one of my all-time slow jams, hands down, Hold Me.

Special thanks go to Theresa and KB. Of course, as usual, there's more in the podcast, so if you're so inclined, download and listen to find out how the influence Ms Escovedo has on yours truly. OSW: Everything Man

I have a couple of surprises here.....

Old School Wednesday: Everything Man.

(Problems with javascript/browser? Click here.)

Podcast/mix available here. [Click to play or right click-save as to download.]
Want to subscribe to podcasts? Use this link.

01 - Quincy Jones - Stuff Like That
02 - The Jacksons - Things I Do For You
03 - Cheryl Lynn - Encore
04 - Chuckii Booker - (Don't U Know) I Love U
05 - Troop - Keep You Next To Me
06 - Michael Jackson - Baby Be Mine
07 - Jamaica Boys - Let Me Hold You Closer (Don't Fight It)
08 - Lindsey Buckingham - Trouble
09 - Daybreak - Everything Man
10 - Ray Parker Jr. - After Midnight
11 - Maze - Golden Time of Day
12 - Karyn White - Nobody But My Baby
13 - The Gap Band - Wednesday Lover
14 - Atlantic Starr - Am I Dreaming
15 - After 7 - Truly Something Special
16 - P.M. Dawn - I'd Die Without You

Quincy Jones and a well-known pair of female vocalists are the force behind Stuff Like That, which kicks off the mix. The Jacksons' The Things I Do For You continue the vibe, leading right into Cheryl Lynn's Encore. Chuckii Booker and Troop continue with their solid tracks with Don't You Know I Love You (check out the video here) and Keep You Next To Me, segueing into Michael's Baby Be Mine from Thriller, which is celebrating it's 25th anniversary this year. The Jamaica Boys (Marcus Miller, Lenny White, and Mark Stevens - who has a sister named Yvette Stevens - marinate on that) give us the wonderful Let Me Hold You Closer (Don't Fight It). Lindsey Buckingham (remember Fleetwood Mac), drops into the blend with Trouble, leading us into Daybreak's Everything Man, which should be recognizable to those who have heard Talib Kweli's Eardrum CD (which is also one of my top 10 CDs of 2007).

Ray Parker, Jr. drops the instrumental After Midnight, while Maze drops Golden Time of Day (happy belated birthday to Mr. Beverly). Karyn White's Nobody But My Baby leads right into The Gap Band and Atlantic Starr. The final tracks ending this blend are After 7's Truly Something Special and PM Dawn's I'd Die Without You. As usual, there are several requests pending that will be featured on next week's OSW. Of course, as usual, there's more in the podcast, so if you're so inclined, download and listen. 11 - Roger - If You're Serious
12 - Loose Ends - Music Takes Me Higher
13 - Shalamar - Let's Find The Time For Love
14 - Robert Winters & Fall - I'm Your Magic Man

Con Funk Shun and The Brothers Johnson start this mix off right, leading us into Thelma's You Used To Hold Me So Tight and Shannon's Do You Wanna Get Away. These tunes are followed by the voices of Belinda Lipscomb on lead vocals on Scientific Love, and Bunny DeBarge on her popular solo single Save The Best For Me.

Paul's instrumental Rainforest and George McCrae's I Get Lifted lead the way into Chicago's track, If You Leave Me Now. While we've got Michael and Roger up next with Let Me Love You and If You're Serious, Loose Ends slides right in with Music Takes Me Higher from the CD, A Little Spice. Shalamar continues on with Let's Find The Time For Love, and Robert Winters and Fall end the set with I'm Your Magic Man.

Special thanks go to BSOTS, Mrs. Tanya, and T. Grundy. There are several requests pending that will be featured on next week's OSW.
