OSW: New Jack Swing, Volume 5
In light of the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, which varied from very entertaining to....well, not so much, the masses (by popular vote) have requested a New Jack Swing old school tribute. Now following in the footsteps of number one, number two, number three, and number four, I give you:

01 - Guy - I Like
02 - Heavy D & The Boyz - We Got Our Own Thang
03 - The Wooten Brothers - I'll Wait
04 - Timmy Gatling - Concentrate On You
05 - Ready for the World - My Girly
06 - Kool Moe Dee - Wild Wild West
07 - Johnny Gill - Rub You The Right Way
08 - Guy - Teddy's Jam
09 - Al B. Sure - Off on Your Own (Girl)
10 - The Gyrlz - Jam Jam (If You Can)
11 - En Vogue - You Dont Have To Worry
12 - Janet Jackson - Alright
13 - Groove Theory - Ride
14 - Kiss the Sky - Living for You
This is how it went down. I Like has been used before in a previous NJS entry, but due to the Teddy Riley tribute and multiple requests, the song has been placed as the starting track. We Got Our Own Thang logically follows, with beats provided by no other than DJ Eddie F. The Wooten Brothers' I'll Wait is one of the most overlooked tracks, as is their solid album, Try My Love. Timmy's Concentrate on You follows, with Ready For The World and Kool Moe Dee continuing the New Jack onslaught.
Johnny Gill's popular track, Rub You The Right Way continues the vibe, as does Teddy's Jam, one of the instrumentals that is included on each Guy album. Al B. Sure and The Gyrlz follow with jams accentuated by Kyle West. These tracks lead iinto You Don't Have To Worry, from En Vogue's debut album Born To Sing.
Janet's Alright is followed by one of the mellow tracks on Groove Theory's album, spiced by Amel Larrieux's signature voice and Bryce Wilson's groove. This is capped off with Kiss The Sky's Living for You, again brought by vocals from Jaki Graham and the rhythmic skills of Paul Hardcastle.
Take it light.

oh EJ!
I'm going to listen to this all day tomorrow.
Love me some NJS! Another great era in my life!
Kool Moe Dee was it for me back in the day. Heavy D, Guy, Al B., man, the memories I have of these guys. Music was off the chain then!
The only part of the VH1 honors that should have been better: the NJS tribute. Honestly, you cannot expect an audience (who didn't even know the Keith Sweat's "I Wanna") to embrace that genre. Most of them were either just born or not even here. And where the heck was Aaron and Damian Hall? Heavy D?
I also thought Snoops tribute should have been better. Ice-T 'effed up the Crip walk!
Whodini tore it up though! They still got it! We need to bring the Wop back! LOL!
Takes me back to my Sophmore, Junior and Senior years of High School.
Little story. I went to the HS of Art and Design and it was funny seing the birth of NJS because one of the Guy's dancers by the name of Kevin or K-Loose went to A&D. For the videos "Groove Me" and Johnny Kemps "Just Got Paid" a good portion of the school (Juniors and Seniors) were in the video. I wasn't unfortunately. But I could always check the vids on NYC'S Video Music Box with Ralph McDaniels and The Vid Kid!
Off On Your Own was the jam...another High School memory..a friend
of mine who looked EXACTLY like Jasmine Guy 9 (who I had the crush for..my friend) would always talk about Al B...and her love of motorcycles. LOL! Anybody know where Kyle West is....He was the closet thing..along with Al B for writing lyrics that came close to a
Flyte Tyme 2. The material they did for Tevin Campbell and the song
"I've Waited Too Long" by Cheyanne. (If you ever get a chance E could you post this...I think I might have it on vinyl, I have to check.)
Cool stuff seeing the NYC clubs and locales in the videos and going to school in Manhattan.
Heavy D & The Boyz - We Got Our Own Thang...WOW! NJS meets House...Loved that video too...The good care free days!
Thanks EJ!
P.S. -
Could you let me know if the new Chaka Khan is channeling the classic Flyte Tyme sound. I love JJ and TL's work but I am longing for their more pre-Janet 90's sound...(I know,I know I should not look back and let artist grow) but there was something about the "sound" that was just right..the lyrics they come with are always tight.
Thanks for the grooves EJ...and letting me talk/write you guys ears and eyeballs off. Love this corner of the Internet!
Best!
Wow, Timmy Gatling. One of the original members of Guy.
