At first, when I started designing an OSW, I thought I would start out with a nice post-disco mix, but a friend of mine from Chicago, DJ, suggested (rather surreptitiously, I might add) that I do a mix with Incognito. At first I shrugged at the thought, believing that they they didn't have enough material to fulfill the OSW requirement. I was seriously mistaken. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that they had quite a bit of material before 1997. It was on!
I started asking friends what their favorite cuts were. James, the man behind J-Notes, asked about Inside Life, one of their first CDs, which is why Always There is the first cut in the mix. Among the acid jazz playlists I put together, Tribes, Vibes and Scribes was being played heavily while I was searching for more songs, which is why Change and I Love What You Do For Me were picked. It was all about the remake of Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing that made me take notice of the group. As I noticed, I wasn't alone.
As expected, the CD Positivity was the favorite among all the people I taked to, with the warm Still A Friend of Mine and the introspective Deep Waters being the two cuts that were on everyone's request list. Givin' It Up and Step Into My Life were tunes that I hear among clubs everywhere, "Step" being one of my all-time favorites, with Maysa's wonderful scats which would become her signature.
During 100 and Rising, Maysa went to pursue her solo career, which introduced Pamela Anderson-Lee (cousin of Jhelisa and Carleen Anderson) and Joy Malcolm. The same vibes present during the previous two CDs were present in this one as well, with Where Did We Go Wrong and Good Love starting out the album. Spellbound and Speechless is also a personal favorite of mine, having been used on OSW a couple of months ago.
During my time on the west coast, Beneath The Surface was released, signalling the return of Maysa to the fold. All That You Want Me To Be was the extra track on the CD that I kept playing continuously. Hold On To Me was another standout on the album, as was Labour of Love, sung by Chris Ballin.
Finally, I had to add tracks from the CD No Time Like The Future. I had to play Centre of the Sun, the melancholy love track and counter it with the great remake of Nights Over Egypt sung beautifully by Jocelyn and Maysa, and also add Marrakech, which gets us ready for the instrumentals to close out the set, Magnetic Ocean and Barumba.
Special thanks to the trio from Chicago, along with the music maestros T. Grundy, Todd Kelley and J-Notes for adding their thoughts into this OSW. Take it light.

Ahhhh... the OSW just keeps better with time. This is such a nice mix. After the unexpected "vaction" last week due to some technical glitches, EJ comes back with a BANG! Right from the start with "Always There" to "Deep Waters", a nicely uptempo version of "Nights Over Egypt" (who did the original?; can't remember at this moment) all the way to the end, this mix is certifiably "good shyt!" I gonna end up playing this one over and over again for days.
BTW EJ, you know you got into my head yesterday and now I just have to start off tomorrow's TPTD with '"T" Plays It Cool'. After you mentioned it nothing else sounded just quite right to kick off the mix with {smile}.
I LOVE YOU FOR THIS!!! Incognito is definitely one of my fave groups...period. The selection for the first track was on point for those starting work.
Thank you!
Hi, EJ. When I saw this OSW, I thought 'Fresh' had put it together, as Mr. Incognito-fanataic - LOL. Good stuff, as always, and on time! hahaha
Cheers
A breath of fresh air Man! Love this music. Music coming from this crowd and their contemporaries on labels such as Naked Music always put me in a good mood. Similar to how the dance music (and rap music such as Man Parrish..I saw that Hip Hop Be Bop posted in the crates. Yes!) from the 80's. Kinda' always puts me in a Dhar Braxton, Ten City, Nocera-ish,type of mood.
If this makes sense even the contemporary nostalgia gives me nostalgia..and that's a good thing!
Ditto to what the post said above on Nights Over Egypt. They did The Jones Girls proud.
Play on, E!
EJ, you have outdone yourself again. I am big Icognito fan so I will be playing this mix in heavy rotation today. I am honored to be a part of the process.
I have all these songs and then some. Way to highlight my favorite group.
Now this is heaven! Incognito always puts me in a mellow mood. Deep Waters really does it for me.
Ah, Incognito... good stuff! Positivity was my favorite album of theirs too.
EJ,
Just wanted to thank you for putting this music out there. I just discovered your site and I want to give you props on your mixes. The Incognito mix is the first one that I've commented on, but I've heard several others and they are all good. This one in particular I love not just because I love Incognito, but Maysa is one of my favorite singers and I never get tired of hearing her sing these songs or her solo stuff.
Keep on, rockin' on...
Wow, music to fall in love to...
Incognito is sunshine.
How about a couple remix albums for Positivity or Adventures in Black Sunshine by Miguel Migs or DJ Krush...?
Dang my forgetting my TypeKey login info...EJ....what more can I say...7 secs or 7 months after u created this...it's just HOT. U already know the deal on 'Cog...Keep doin it Sensei-Style...this is goin in my iPod and the link in my current feature on Incognito
