J’s take on it? Read on….

Remember me? I used to blog at thebrotherlove.com. While on hiatus, I’ve taken refuge in my music. I was listening to most of these songs earlier this week when I yelled down the hall to EJ “Hey, I think I have your next OSW”. Membership has its privileges.
As I hinted in my last OSW, I listen to a lot of variety so putting together a playlist that’s not schizo can be a challenge for me. Stay with me, okay?

This time I start with classic The Art Of Noise. Everyone needs more Marvin Gaye in their life (other than the staples). “Stay With Me” brings back great memories as does “Who’s That Girl” and Johnny Gill. The Carole Davis is strictly for EJ (does anyone else remember her?) I switch gears and add some bass with A Tribe Called Quest, D’Angelo and Teena Marie.
Speaking of “groove”, Dee-Lite is just plain fun. En Vogue still sounds fresh while Sly Stone and Lenny Kravitz reminds us that black folks should use more rock in our songs today. Everyone loved Hall & Oates (“I Can’t Go For That” was my father’s favorite). But Peter Gabriel is probably the wild card here. I wrap it all up with a great slow song from Brownstone. So, it’s all good.

Enjoy.

OSW: Chillin’, Volume 1

It’s getting cooler. Literally and figuratively.

01 – Earth, Wind & Fire – Got to Get You into My Life
02 – Phil Collins – Sussudio
03 – Carleen Anderson – Mama Said
04 – D Train – Walk on By
05 – Incognito – Step Into My Life
06 – Loose Ends – Remote Control
07 – Jade – Every Day Of The Week
08 – Chantay Savage – The Way You Turn Me On
09 – Skyy – High
10 – Jesse Powell – All I Need
11 – Kiara (with Shanice Wilson) – This Time
12 – Glenn Jones – Show Me
13 – Barkays – Anticipation
14 – War – Baby It’s Cold Outside

The albums by Carleen, Incognito, Loose Ends, and Chantay Savage are some of the albums I played in serious rotation back in the day. I couldn’t remember the last time I had heard "Baby It’s Cold Outside." There’s a lot I could say about all of these tracks, they’re so good.

As before, I owe a podcast for the previous OSW, so watch for that this week as well as this one. In addition, comments are still outta whack, but I’ll approve them as soon as I can get to em….

[10/21/06] – All three podcasts are finally up. Enjoy.

OSW: And Love Goes On

As the temperature starts falling, these mixes just get a little bit more difficult. Let’s hope you enjoy this one. Here we go:

01 – Earth, Wind & Fire – And Love Goes On
02 – The Jacksons – Lovely One
03 – Teena Marie – I Need Your Lovin’
04 – Raydio – Jack And Jill
05 – Human League – (Keep Feeling) Fascination
06 – Lee Ritenour – Countdown (Captain Fingers)
07 – Tom Browne – Secret Fantasy
08 – Stephanie Mills & Teddy Pendergrass – Two Hearts
09 – Alexander O’neal – Sunshine
10 – New Edition – Can You Stand the Rain
11 – Force MDs – Fairytale Lover
12 – A Taste Of Honey – Sukiyaki
13 – The Emotions – Don’t Ask My Neighbor
14 – Anita Baker – Good Love

When I was compiling this mix, I started checking out Earth Wind And Fire. When I heard And Love Goes On, that made my day, and kept the impetus going to complete this mix. Human League’s track got played so much I believe I bought three copies of the EP that contained the song. While The Emotions’ has always been a staple in my house back in the day, Anita Baker’s Good Love written by Gary Taylor is – hands down- the most played single off of Giving You The Best That I Got (and, I admit, quite possibly my favorite Anita Baker song).

[10/21/06] – The podcast is finally up. Enjoy.

OSW: ALOE Volume 1

A mix with a splash of Qamar, a touch of CoachMVP, and a nice helping from Thierno.

01 – Rene & Angela – I’ll Be Good
02 – Junior – Somebody (12 inch Version)
03 – Mac Band – Jealous
04 – New Edition – A Little Bit Of Love
05 – Gary Brown – Somebody’s Been Sleepin’ In My Bed
06 – Barry White – I Only Want to Be with You
07 – Soul II Soul – Untitled
08 – Teena Marie – Parking Music
09 – Mary J Blige – Love No Limit
10 – Maysa – Sexy
11 – Highland Place Mobsters – Catalogs of Lost Love (Vol. 1)
12 – Eagles – I Cant Tell You Why
13 – Howard Hewett – I’m For Real
14 – Rockie Robbins – I Believe In Love

I have this thing for the Junior track, which I hadn’t heard in a while, Barry White (with production from Jam and Lewis), Maysa (co-written and background vocals by Siedah Garrett), and the unmitigated Eagles.
The Soul II Soul instrumental is a nice touch, while Highland Place Mobsters’ track is a short clip demonstrating what they were capable of.
